Maybe the Dog Had a Cold

The mother of US Olympic volleyball player Carli Lloyd flew into Rio, dropped off her suitcase at Norwegian Getaway where she was staying (the ship is docked in Rio for use as a hotel by US team members and guests), and thanks to delayed flights, had to rush right to the stadium to see her daughter play.

A bomb-sniffing dog alerted on Cindy Lloyd's suitcase before it was put aboard the ship, so as a safety measure, it was blown up (the suitcase, not the dog).

Cruise News Daily Headlines for February 7, 2014

* Confirming What Was Known All Along
The Centers for Disease Control issued their report on the illness that affected approximately 700 people aboard Royal Caribbean’s Explorer of the Seas during its January 21 sailing, and as expected, they confirmed it was norovirus. Not only that, but it was a relatively new strain, GII.4 Sydney, but in the US it is currently the most common strain causing most norovirus illnesses.
Jan Vinje is the head virologist who tested the samples from people aboard Explorer in the CDC’s lab. He said that the virus most often is brought aboard by a passenger. It’s so extremely contagious it spreads rapidly before the cruise line can start their sanitation procedures.

* And We’re Not Going Anyplace
The cruise industry is relatively new in China. Apparently Chinese vacationers haven’t yet dealt with cruise lines enough to know that the cruise contract is stacked against the passenger.
A lot of passengers aboard Costa Victoria didn’t know that if their ship missed a port, they couldn’t really “demand” anything of the cruise line. So they did, and they got something.

* The Ship Has a Name
Norwegian Getaway now officially has a name. The ship was christened this afternoon in Miami, its new year round home port.  More

Norwegian Getaway Christened at Miami Party

Norwegian Getaway will be homeported year round at Miami, and the ship was named today at a real Miami party. The godmothers were the Miami Dolphin Cheerleaders, and entertainment included hometown Miami legend, Pitbull.

Cruise News Daily Headlines for February 6, 2014

* Celebrity Hopes Canyon Ranch Will Rub You the Right Way
Last month Steiner Leisure announced that they had been informed by Celebrity Cruises that their contract to operate the line’s spas would not be renewed. The question has been what provider would replace them. That question was answered this morning when Celebrity announced that Canyon Ranch would be operating the spas, beauty salons, wellness and fitness services aboard Celebrity ships.
Judging by what Canyon Ranch does on other ships, Celebrity’s customers should expect to see a real difference from the Steiner-provided product.

* The Only Cruise Line You’ll See
If you’re watching the Olympic coverage on TV, and don’t go to the bathroom or kitchen during the commercials, Carnival Cruise Lines will be the only cruise line you see. Carnival has won the rights to be the exclusive cruise line advertiser during the Olympic coverage.

Cruise News Daily Headlines for January 30, 2014

* Carnival Schedules Return to Baltimore
Well, that was fast. Last fall, Carnival Cruise Lines announced they would suspend their cruises from Baltimore indefinitely, beginning in the fall of 2014, due to the economics of operating in the new North American Emission Control Area. Today they announced a date for their return in the spring of 2015, essentially meaning they will only be out of the market for the winter 2014-2015 season.
The will return with a ship with a lot of new features, one of them, making it possible to return to Baltimore.

* Caribbean Princess - Hurrying to Beat the Fog
Princess was faced with an interesting situation with regard to its turnaround at Houston this weekend.
In the end, they decided that, due to predicted fog Saturday morning, Caribbean Princess would return to Houston a day early, arriving after midnight Friday morning. Unfortunately, the early return necessitated canceling the last port call in Belize.
Ah, but there's more to the decision than just the fog.

Cruise News Daily Headlines for November 20, 2013

* An Enrichment Program Where the Speaker Gets to Prove How Good He Is
If you haven’t sailed on Holland America, you probably think all cooking demonstrations are the same. The chef mixes some ingredients together on a folding table put together either by the pool or in the atrium, while telling you some charming story in heavily-accented English, and there you have your cooking demonstration. But not on Holland America.

They’re serious about cooking. So serious they have built “Culinary Arts Centers” on each ship. These are fully-equipped small show kitchens in small theaters. The chef actually cooks things there for people who are genuinely interested in learning about cooking.  More

* The End of the Song
After leaving the Royal Caribbean fleet, one of the most iconic ships in the industry, Song of Norway, hasn’t ever found a home where the passengers loved it they way they did when it was a Royal Caribbean ship. (It was built to be Royal Caribbean’s second ship in 1970.) Since 1997, it has been passed from one line to another, each naming it something new, and it deteriorated along the way. Now it has come to the end of its life.

Video of Norwegian Getaway's River Convenance

Last week Norwegian Getaway left Meyer Werft, and we showed you pictures. It was an unusual river conveyance to be sure, with a nighttime departure (to coincide with the tides) from the yard at 1am, an even-larger ship having to ease through the narrow passages, and fog virtually all the way. Meyer Werft has now released a video of Norwegian Getaway's journey from the yard to the sea.

Norwegian Getaway had a rather unusual conveyance down the river Ems to the North Sea today, the path which all ships built at Meyer Werft must go, once and only once. More

* Grand Princess Continues to Hawaii
Grand Princess continued on to Hawaii Thursday night after concluding its search for the passenger who jumped overboard Wednesday afternoon. The woman’s body was never located.

Norwegian Getaway Departs Meyer Werft

Norwegian Getaway departed Meyer Werft in Papenburg early this morning (November 15, 2015) at about 1am (local time) amidst cold and fog, causing the ship to quickly become invisible. The fog persisted through its entire river conveyance, sometimes making it impossible to see the ship from the shore.

* Making a Slow Getaway
Meyer Werft said today that they have scheduled Norwegian Getaway’s river conveyance from the yard in Papenburg down the Ems River to the North Sea for this Thursday. This is the slow methodical voyage - backwards - down the relatively shallow river through its various narrow passages. As the largest class of ship Meyer has built so far, things will be even more slow and careful than ever.

Norwegian Getaway Getting Ready to Leave Home

Updated times November 1, 10:30am

Last week CND reported to subscribers that Meyer Werft would float out Norwegian Getaway from their covered building dock on Saturday (November 2, 2013 at approximately 3:30pm local time - 10:30am eastern time in the US). The date and time, of course, are always tentative subject to the weather cooperating. The event will be webcast on the Meyer Werft website on Saturday.

Meyer will schedule Norwegian Getaway's transit of the Ems River to the North Sea at a later date. It is tentatively planned for mid-November.

In this photo taken yesterday, Norwegian Getaway is shown nearly complete and being readied for its float out. You'll note the funnel is still to be attached after the float out.

Once in the lagoon after the float out, tests will be carried out for several hours before docking at the finishing dock. Then within a couple of days the Norwegian crew will arrive and move aboard the ship.

* New Hazzard from Lyubov Orlova
When last seen, the aging polar cruise ship Lyubov Orlova was floating in the North Atlantic. The ship broke free of its tow line as it was being towed from Canada to the Dominican Republic for scrapping last January. Now the Irish Coast Guard believes it's threatening Ireland because of an unusual biohazzard.
