Apparently it takes longer to investigate an accident in Italy than anyone thought.
MSC had previously canceled this week's sailing of MSC Opera after last week's accident in Venice. While repairs were going to be completed earlier this week, MSC canceled the rest of the cruise so the Italian authorities would have plenty of time to complete their investigation.
MSC said today that the investigation still is not complete, so the line will cancel this weekend's sailings also.

Trouble in the Canal
It was a quiet Sunday morning in Venice along the Guiadecca Canal. Passengers on the second day of their cruise from Verona were having breakfast in the outdoor restaurant atop Uniworld's River Countess which docked at the San Basilio dock along the canal. About 8:30am (local time) MSC Opera rounded the bend and the River Countess passengers had a nice view of the large (65,591 gross tons) MSC heading up the canal to the Venice Cruise terminal.
That was until something went wrong aboard MSC Opera and it went out of control directly toward the smaller river boat. MSC says the captain applied all the established required procedures (including the long warning blast of the ship's whistle), but the cruise ship grazed the San Basilio dock and collided with River Countess.

Waiting on Venice
Venice may be less of a familiar port on European cruises in the near future.
The first of the month, as part of their 2019 budget, the city of Venice enacted a 10-euro daily “entrance tax” for tourists, simply for entering the popular city crowded with tourists.

Cunard has added something to the 2015 fall schedule of Queen Mary 2 that has proven popular each time it’s on the books: a late autumn 13-day round trip from New York to the Caribbean. Not only that, but it’s bookended with transatlantic crossings which means passengers in the UK could sail a 28-day round trip from Southampton to New York and Caribbean (or Americans could squeeze in an off-season trip to the UK once the summer tourist have gone home).
Cunard is also adding two late autumn two-week trips aboard Queen Victoria from Southampton to the Caribbean in 2015.

Last week Norwegian Cruise Line announced that Norwegian Escape would be positioned in Miami for a seven-night eastern Caribbean program. Next week, the line will open it for sale, and next month, they will open the rest of their Caribbean program for the winter 2015/2016 season.
We told you that the line’s goal has been to have two large ships in the South Florida to the Caribbean market, but while they’ve been attaining that goal, they have had their other purpose-built Freestyle ships in the Caribbean sailing from New York and the Southeast where they could be top of the line. Now that they have the large ships in South Florida, they’re not forgetting those other Southeastern markets.

Divers today believe they found the remains of the final two people missing from Costa Concordia.
* Cruise Industry and City of Venice Agree to Talk about Alternatives
Those protests over the weekend in Venice that delayed cruise ships by a couple of hours may have done some good for the protesters’ cause. Yesterday, MSC executive chairman Pierfrancesco Vago said the industry has agreed to discuss alternatives to the route which sails down the Guidecca canal past St. Mark’s Square. That could mean moving the port or the cruise terminal to accommodate some other route.
* What? No Grey Poupon?
Crossing the Atlantic today, on one of her regular runs, Queen Mary 2 made a special delivery in the middle of the ocean. QM2 left New York on Sunday, but yesterday its crew received a special request for assistance from Mylene Paquette, a Canadian rower is attempting to become the first North American woman to row solo across the Atlantic. She started out from Halifax on July 6 and hit the remnants of Atlantic storm Humberto and lost her anchor, satellite phone and other supplies.

Last spring when Royal Princess’ propeller blades were damaged in the yard, replacements were borrowed from a P&O newbuild that could only be referred to as the P&O ship because it didn’t have a name. After a high-profile announcement in London today, the 141,000-ton sister to Royal Princess now has a name - Britannia.

There is good news for the passengers who are scheduled to board Royal Princess on Friday for a 12-night cruise to Venice. Princess says they will have completed repairs on the ship’s electrical system, and passengers should proceed to Venice, because the cruise will operate as scheduled.

Disney Magic Arrives in Venice
Sailing into Venice is always spectacular, as it was for Disney Magic this week. But this arrival has special significance because it was the first time Disney Magic has returned to Venice since it was constructed there by Fincantieri in 1998 at its nearby yard at Marghera
This was the first of multiple overnight calls Disney Magic will make at Venice during its current Mediterranean season. Disney Magic will also return to the Mediterranean in 2014, using Venice as its home port for several sailings.

Carnival Breeze Arrives Venice
The 130,000-ton Carnival Breeze arrived in Venice late Saturday afternoon (June 2, 2012) for its inaugural cruise on which it would depart Sunday afternoon. The ship arrived over the protests of environmentalists. Shown below are photos of the arrival.

New Port Could Sink Venice
A new port proposed for Venice could hasten the sinking of the island city according to an article in the London Telegraph, which attributes the information to the Royal Institute of British Architects. The culprit, according to article, is the additional dredging that will be needed to accommodate the large ships. The article calls Venice one of the world's busiest cruise ports, citing the rise in cruise traffic from 200 cruise ship calls in 2000 to 510 in 2005.
