Fincantieri Takes Majority Stake in STX France
Italian shipbuilder Fincantieri (one of the world's largest builders of cruise ships) signed the paperwork today to acquire another large builder of ships, STX Europe in Saint-Nazaire, France, formerly Chantiers D'Alantique.
The company agreed to purchase 66.66% of the STX Europe stock for 79.5 million euros, which will be paid in cash.

Video: Evacuation Tests on Mein Schiff 3
This is what most cruise passengers will never get to see. Mein Schiff 3 is under construction for TUI Cruises at the STX Finland yard in Turku, and the crew is testing the evacuation systems they would use in case they would be ordered to abandon ship.
Yes, the video is in German, and no, there is no English translation available. It's not necessary to speak German to figure out what's going on, but if you do, you'll have an even better understanding.

MSC Cruises Contracts with STX Europe for Two New Ships
MSC Cruises has signed a letter of intent for STX Europe to build two 167,600-ton vessels for delivery in 2017 and 2019. The ships will carry 4,500 passengers in double occupancy, up to a total capacity of 5,700 passengers, along with 1,536 crew members.
The contract will also include options for two additional ships to be built later. Construction is scheduled to begin in the spring of 2015 at the STX yard in Saint-Nazaire, France.

Four men were arrested aboard the wreck of Costa Concordia early Friday morning for allegedly picking up items for souvenirs. All four were employees of the salvage company.
* Fire aboard Dawn Princess
Last Friday night as Dawn Princess was sailing between Wellington and Napier (NZ) it experienced a fire in an electrical substation on Deck 6 sending passengers to their muster stations for approximately an hour. There were no injuries to passengers or crew members, and the ship returned to normal operation.

Mein Schiff 3 Float Out Completed
After beginning to floating the ship up on Friday afternoon (November 8, 2013), the dry dock continued flooding overnight, and Saturday three tugs towed TUI's Mein Schiff 3 to the finishing dock at the STX Finland yard in Turku (Finland) where it will remain over the next six months while it is completed. The 99,700 gross ton ship is slated for delivery May 2014.
Here, after the gates to the dry dock are opened, Mein Schiff 3 is towed out by a single tug and assisted by two others (to control the ship since it has no power at this point). The ship's main engines won't be started for the first time until January.
Work will continue on Mein Schiff 3 at the finishing dock until it is delivered in May 2014. The ship is shown here Saturday afternoon.

STX Floats TUI's Mein Schiff 3
STX Finland floated TUI's Mein Schiff 3 for the first time this afternoon (November 8, 2013) at their Turku (Finland) yard. Once floating on Saturday, it will be towed to a finishing dock for completion of the interior. The 99,700-ton vessel will carry 2,506 passengers (double) and a crew of approximately 1,000 when it enters service in June 2014.
The photo above was taken just as the water begins to flood the drydock this afternoon. Filling it with some 300 million liters of water will take until tomorrow.

TUI's Mein Schiff 3 Construction Update
Construction is proceeding on TUI's Mein Schiff 3 at the STX Finland yard in Turku. These photos were taken last week at the yard.
As you may recall from the renderings, there will be an unusual diamond-shaped structure attached to the ship's stern. You can see the space for it in the bottom photo. It will be attached shortly.

* Costa Concordia Ready to Roll
If you haven’t seen Costa Concordia lately, you will be surprised. Most TV networks and newspapers have been using photos and footage that was shot more than a year ago. In them, the ship is lying on its side and looks much like it just lay down on its side for a rest.
In reality, if you see the photos taken in the last couple of months, you’d notice the ship is rusting, but the biggest change is that the exposed (port) side of the ship is almost completely obscured by the giant boxes (sponsons) affixed to it, which, once the ship is righted, will be filled with air and refloat the ship.

You don’t usually see them in the pictures from the shipyards because they’ve been cropped out, but without them most pictures you see from the yards wouldn’t be possible. They stand on two giant legs straddling the dry docks and lifting the huge blocks of the ship into place.
These cranes are major pieces of the yards’ equipment. Because of their height (they need to stand at least several stories taller than the ships), they can be seen from the locale surrounding the yard and become something of symbols of the shipyard. More

Assembly of New Giant Crane Begins at STX France
Assembly of a giant new crane has begun at the STX France yard in Saint-Nazaire. The new crane, referred to as TGP, will have almost twice the lifting capacity of the one it is replacing. Its first use will be in the construction of Royal Caribbean's third Oasis-class ship which will be built at the yard for delivery in the spring of 2016.

TUI Reveals Signature Features of Mein Schiff 3
When Mein Schiff 3 launches in May 2014, one of its signature features will make it instantly recognizable. On its stern, made of almost 1,800-square-feet of glass, it will have a multi-faceted diamond structure housing four restaurants and lounges as shown in the artist's renderings below.

RCCL Orders Third Oasis-Class Ship
Royal Caribbean Cruises ordered a third Oasis-class vessel for their Royal Caribbean International brand today from STX France.
The ship will be built at the STX France yard in Saint Nazaire for delivery in mid-2016.

Leaving in Style
Have you ever wondered how the crew would leave a ship in an emergency, once the lifeboats with passengers are deployed? In larger ships, they would use something like the Marine Evacuation System shown in this video from MSC Cruises. It shows their crews training to use the system aboard a Fantasia-class ship.
Technical training has already begun by crew members aboard MSC Divina, the next ship in the class, which is under construction at the STX France yard in Saint Nazaire (France). That includes the deployment of the MES, and what they learn is practiced every week.
There are two of the systems aboard each of the Fantasia-class ships. They would normally be used to evacuate crew members in liferafts after passengers have filled the lifeboats. Each system deploys four of the giant, enclosed, inflatable liferafts, meaning that together they will accommodate 1,514 people beyond the capacity of the lifeboats.

Viking Cancels STX Order
STX France says that Viking River Cruises has withdrawn from the discussions they were having with the yard regarding the construction of two 41,000-ton oceangoing vessels for a new division the line has been planning to create. The contract was to have included an option for a third vessel.
The two companies jointly announced a preliminary agreement to build the vessels last December, subject to completion of contract negotiations. The vessels were to have been delivered in the spring of 2014 and 2015.
There have been rumors in recent days that the discussions were stalled due to an issue with financing. There are also rumors that Fincantieri is interested in stepping in to build the vessels. It is not known if Fincantieri is able to offer some sort of financial package.

MSC to Purchase Libyan Ship
STX Europe said this morning that they have entered into a contract with MSC Cruises to continue construction of the ship originally ordered by GNMTC, the start-up Libyan cruise line.
The contract with GNMTC was canceled by STX in June 2011 when the Libyan company failed to make a scheduled payment. STX continued construction after the cancellation in anticipation that the hull would be purchased, and it was generally assumed that MSC would be the buyer.
The ship is nearly identical to MSC's Fantasia class and will be a sister to MSC Divina which is still under construction and will enter service in May 2012. (Both ships are under construction at the STX France yard at Saint Nazaire, and MSC Preziosa is shown in the yard in the photo below.)
MSC said this morning the 140,000-vessel will be named MSC Preziosa (treasure). The 333-meter ship will have 1,751 passenger staterooms on 14 decks (18 decks overall). The ship will also feature 69 suites in MSC's luxurious Yacht Club in the private ship-within-a-ship area.
Right now, total construction is 45% complete, and the mechanical zones are 70% complete. Interior fittings will begin shortly, and delivery of MSC Preziosa is scheduled for March 2013.
MSC Preziosa will become the 13th ship in the MSC fleet, and the fourth in the Fantasia class, when it is delivered next year.

TUI Orders New Ship from STX
STX Europe said today that TUI Cruises, the joint venture between German travel conglomerate TUI and Royal Caribbean Cruises Ltd, has ordered a 97,000-ton vessel from STX and that it will be built at their Turku yard.
The vessel is scheduled for delivery in the spring of 2014. The order includes an option for a second ship.

STX Floats out MSC Divina
The construction phase of the building of MSC Divina ended on Saturday (September 3, 2011) when it was floated out of the building dock at the STX France yard in Saint Nazaire.
The ship was towed to a finishing dock at the facility where interior work will continue until it is delivered in May 2012.
The ship is the third in the 140,000-ton Fantasia class, but contains 100 additional staterooms and some new design elements.
