Grand Cayman is still at tender port. When seas are rough, it makes tendering too uncomfortable or too dangerous so ships cancel their call and sail right on by. Sometimes there is an alternative. When conditions permit, the tenders can land at Spotts Dock on the south side of the island.
Thousands of cruise passengers have been diverted there since Wednesday this week, and the forecast is that the conditions will continue through the weekend.
Details appeared in the January 5 edition of Cruise News Daily.

Zenith Damages Reef While Anchored at Cayman
Sometimes you can do all the right things and still end up in trouble. That’s Pullmantur’s situation in the Cayman Islands after Tuesday’s incident with Zenith.
While anchored at Grand Cayman, Zenith’s anchor chain caused significant damage to a coral reef, and it was reported and documented on video by a local diver.
Pullmantur and its parent, Royal Caribbean Cruises, are taking heat for the incident in the media and the court of public opinion, but it appears that the ship was anchored where it was supposed to be in a designated anchorage.
Details appeared in the December 10 edition of Cruise News Daily.

Cayman Takes a Tentative Step Forward
It would appear that Grand Cayman may finally be on their way to building a pier for megaliners. But before you start looking for Grand Cayman to have reappeared on cruise itineraries, there are still time-consuming steps for the project to go through first.
Premier Alden McLaughlin confirmed that on Tuesday the Cabinet approved moving to the next phase of the proposed cruise pier, but he said it could be a couple years yet before construction would start.

* Rethinking the Idea in the Caymans - Again
After years of struggling to get a plan in place to build a cruise ship pier at George Town (Grand Cayman), and the government constantly signaling that latest incarnation of a plan was very near to finalizing a plan and beginning construction, it appears there’s going to be yet another halt and a complete reset. Not only that, but the new plan they are now considering seems certain to fail because it now seems they don’t understand the cruise industry.

* RCI Increases Capacity at Tampa with Second Ship
Royal Caribbean International said today that in the fall of 2014 they will homeport a second ship at Tampa.
Vision of the Seas will join Brilliance of the Seas for the winter 2014-2015 season. Vision will operate a 7-day itinerary while Brilliance will continue its 4- and 5-night programs.
* Proof in Numbers
For several years we’ve been reporting that the people of Grand Cayman have gotten it. They need a pier for cruise ships. There have been countless delays in building one, mostly of their own making. Then a couple of years ago, they started to panic as they realized the situation is getting urgent. Cruise ships are passing them by, because large ships just don’t want to tender at the port.
Now their own Ministry of Tourism is providing proof of why it has become so urgent. The ministry released July’s figures for passenger arrivals on cruise ships. They are dismal.

* Coast Guard Issues Report on Carnival Splendor Fire
The US Coast Guard issued their report today on the November 2010 fire aboard Carnival Splendor off the west coast of Mexico which disabled the ship, left it without any power, and it was subsequently towed back to San Diego, arriving three days later.
* A Success for Cayman?
We reported last week that a high-level tourism delegation from the Cayman Islands made a trip to Miami to meet with cruise line officials to talk about how committed the government is to building berthing facilities for cruise ships. They are hoping to stem their constantly decreasing numbers of cruise passengers. Cruise lines don’t want to tender at ports from their large ships, which are now the norm in the Caribbean, so those are bypassing the island. The government is hoping to eventually woo them once their cruise port is underway, but in the interim, they are hoping to at least not have any more ships withdrawn from the island. Ideally, they’d like to have more.
That’s what Tourism Minister Moses Kirkconnell says he got. At a news conference in Miami, he said a cruise line has agreed to have a ship add Grand Cayman to its itinerary, but neither the line nor the ship was named.

* MSC Divina Is a Big Deal
When MSC Divina debuts in Miami on November 20, it’s a big deal. This is only the second time one of MSC’s Fantasia-class ships, their largest ships, has left the Mediterranean. Last year one was homeported seasonally in South America. MSC Divina will be homeported in Miami year round. This is a big deal. (Vice President Biden would make it a little stronger, but wisely, he hasn’t been invited.)
And because it’s such a big deal, MSC is pulling out all the stops to celebrate MSC Divina’s maiden cruise from Miami.
* They’ve Heard It All Before
Tourism officials from Grand Cayman are headed to Miami to talk with cruise lines about the government’s plans to build cruise ship berths on the island and to try to convince the lines to keep Grand Cayman on the schedule, for at least some of their ships, while the new berths are being built.
* Grandeur Returns to Baltimore
With repairs completed from its May 27 fire, Grandeur of the Seas returned to Baltimore yesterday, its year round home port. More

Cayman Cruise Berths Ready for Bids
According to the Cayman Net News, it seems Grand Cayman is finally ready to take another step toward having a place for cruise ships to actually dock. As we've reported in Cruise News Daily, the plan has been mired in dispute and red tape. In our most recent CND article, the Caymans now are seeing the cruise industry's premier ships actually bypassing the island, and apparently that has lit a fire under the government to get the project moving.
Update 3pm. The fire may be there, but it's not a roaring fire. According to Cayman Net News, the deadline for bids has now been extended for another week.
