Court Reinstates Same-Sex Weddings in Bermuda

Bermuda's Supreme Court struck down the island's Domestic Partnership Act which authorized officially sanctioned same-sex domestic partnerships but not marriage, thus allowing all people to marry, including same-sex couples. This will also allow cruise ships registered in Bermuda to offer same-sex weddings.

And Weddings Would Be Good for Business Too

Carnival Corp came out today to actively support OUTBermuda in their efforts to change the law in Bermuda which only allows same-sex couples to register a domestic partnership rather than a marriage.

“Carnival Corporation believes our employees, guests and the public at large deserve equal dignity and respect,” the company said today.

Things Have Changed in Bermuda

Things have changed in Bermuda. There was a time when the island had more cruise business than it could handle and they were choosy about which cruise lines they let in and which they didn't. They only wanted the “right” kind of vacationer. Then cruise lines from the Northeast discovered other destinations. After a few very lean years, Bermuda is now excited when their cruise business grows, and it is open to just about any line that schedules a call.

That said, the government released the 2018 port schedule for cruise calls and they are excited the business is growing, particularly in the off-season.

Filling in the Holes

Last month when Carnival released Carnival Horizon's inaugural programs for 2018, there were holes in the schedule once the ship got to New York in late May. Carnival said those sailings would be detailed in the near future. The future has arrived.

Carnival had a surprise. If Carnival had followed their past MO, there would have been four-night trips scheduled to the Canadian Maritimes. Not in 2018. Get out your shorts, because in 2018, Carnival is sailing from New York to Bermuda.

Perfect Fit

Most cruise ships calling at Bermuda these days are just too large to dock in Hamilton so they tie up at West End - way, way out of town.

Next year, Holland America will return to Bermuda, but they will operate their cruises from Boston with Veendam, which is still a size that can dock right in town in Hamilton, just a short walk to Front Street, giving Holland America’s passengers an entirely different experience from lines operating larger ships.

Details appeared in the July 10 edition of Cruise News Daily.

Cruise News Daily Headlines for October 20, 2014

* Carnival Magic Returns Ebola-free
Carnival Magic returned to Galveston on Sunday without any of the drama that had met it at its previous two port calls. The lab technician aboard who was under quarantine due to the possibility that she had been infected with ebola was pronounced free of the disease, and she reportedly was escorted off the ship as soon as it arrived, and was allowed to drive home without restrictions.

* AIDA’s Newest Ship Is a Gas
There was a different kind of christening ceremony in Hamburg on Saturday. While it had all the trappings of naming a cruise ship, complete with a cruise line executive serving as the godmother, it wasn’t a cruise ship being named, but rather a barge. Not just any barge, it is a special barge.
   AIDA’s Chief Sustainability Officer, Dr. Monika Griefahn was christening, Hummel, the world’s first LNG (liquefied natural gas) hybrid barge, designed to supply berthed cruise ships with electrical power.

Cruise News Daily Headlines for October 17, 2014

* Ebola Hysteria Affects Carnival MagicCarnival Cruise Lines advised passengers aboard Carnival Magic last night that one of their fellow passengers was a lab supervisor at Texas Health Presbyterian Hospital where two ebola patients had been treated, and the CDC had requested the woman be isolated from other passengers, although it said other passengers and crew members were not at risk.
   As usual, there was more to the story, but the story seems to be growing out of proportion due to news media and governmental hysteria.

* Hurricane Gonzalo Closes Bermuda
Bermuda is experiencing a near-direct hit by Hurricane Gonzalo tonight, and the government has asked visitors (and cruise lines) to give them a few days for clean up before arriving on the island. That has prompted two cruise ships to change course for next week.

* Surprise! We’re in Bremerhaven
If you’ve been wondering why you haven’t heard anything about Quantum of the Seas, it’s because it has been out on a second set of sea trials in the North Sea.
   The plan had been to bring it to Blohm + Voss on Sunday for some final adjustments, but that’s not going to happen due to the low water level in the Elbe River.

Cruise News Daily Headlines for August 15, 2014

* Bermuda Again Warmly Welcomes Visitors by Searching their Staterooms
The government of Bermuda has again proven themselves rather visitor-unfriendly. Customs officers went aboard Norwegian Breakaway this week while it was docked in Bermuda and searched two passengers’ staterooms for drugs, arrested the people, essentially forced a plea bargain on them, and pocketed thousands of dollars in fines.
   These visitors apparently did not intend to take the drugs ashore. They had small amounts for personal use, and they were not using them in public. One of the people had marijuana for medical reasons (and had just enough at the prescribed dosage to last through the cruise) and was simply ignorant of Bermuda’s laws.
   We’re not in favor of drugs, but Bermuda’s visitor arrivals are sagging, and the government’s actions are not the way to encourage visitors to come to the island. Visitors tend to avoid places where they are subjected to what they consider unreasonable searches and are then forced to pay large fines or go to jail.

* Carnival Crews Brave Icy Waters
All 24 ships of the Carnival Cruise Lines fleet have taken up the Ice Bucket Challenge to benefit ALS and they in turn challenged their corporate office who took it up and passed it on. Along the way, however, Carnival made a $100,000 to the ALS Association.
   We have the video of the Carnival employees accepting the challenge and the full press release here on our blog.

* Play It Again
Just in case you didn’t get up in the middle of the night or want to spend three hours watching, Royal Caribbean has produced a video of Quantum of the Seas floating out this week. You can see it all in just over three minutes here on our blog.

Cruise News Daily Headlines for July 3, 2014

* Starting the Countdown to Lift Off
Technicians at Giglio Island finished attaching the final sponson to the side of Costa Concordia this afternoon, and now the equipment is ready for testing. At present, the sponsons are filled with water, and when the ship is refloated, the water will be pumped out, raising the ship and giving it buoyancy to be refloated and towed to Genoa where it will be dismantled and recycled.
   As we mentioned earlier, it will be raised only as far as Deck 3, so it will have a draft of some 18.5 meters (60.7 feet).

* Don’t Drink the Water (or Swim in It, Either)
The US Consulate in Bermuda has issued a warning to Americans visiting the island, that swimming at the island’s beaches could be hazardous to their health due to contamination from sewage. * Norwegian’s Strong Response to Tunisian Incident
When Norwegian Jewel arrived at Tunis for its regular call on Sunday (March 9), Tunisian immigration officials told them Israeli passengers could not disembark the ship during the port call.
   Today, Norwegian Cruise Line took an equally unusual action in response. The line announced today that they have canceled all future port calls to Tunisia and will not return.

* The Missing Option
Bermuda is about to play catch-up again under pressure from the cruise industry. They need to somehow enlarge their channel so Quantum of the Seas can get into port.

* They’ve Got the Ship and the Time - and Now the Place
Royal Caribbean has chosen Sembawang Shipyard in Singapore to perform a major refit of the 137,276-gt Voyager of the Seas.
