Star Wars Comes to Disney Dream

Artist's rendering of Millennium Falcon aboard Disney Dream
It hardly seems possible, but Disney Dream is already four years old, and this fall when it goes into dry dock (October 4-24) it will be refit it will be time for some major new features to be added.

One that would excite lots of adults, will only be available to the kids aged 3-12 because it will be a major addition to the Oceaneer Club. The new area, called Star Wars: Millennium Falcon, lets the kids play on the bridge of the spacecraft from the legendary movie series. They will join the battle for good by assisting with the navigation of the powerful spacecraft, and can pilot the spaceship through hyperspace and trigger lightspeed jumps to different locations around the galaxy.

Video: Decorating Disney Dream

As you would expect, the holidays are a magical time aboard Disney Dream, and since this is its first Christmas, they are even more so. Unlike other lines, Disney can draw upon the same year round professionals who are responsible for decorating the park, and they transformed the entire ship - with Disney attention to detail - during its turnaround at Port Canaveral. And speaking of detail, there are new "hidden Mickey's" in the Christmas decorations, as seen in this video.

Final Block of Disney Dream in Place

Disney Dream is still eight months away from its maiden voyage, so it is nowhere near complete, but a major milestone was achieved in its construction earlier this week.

A ship's hull is composed of giant blocks, which are preconstructed and then fitted together into place in the drydock like a giant jigsaw puzzle. Disney Dream is composed of 80 blocks, and the final one, this time the bow, was lifted into place in Meyer Werft's huge covered drydock at their Papenburg (Germany) facility.

Meyer Werft Lays Keel for Disney Dream

Meyer Werft laid the first block of Disney Dream's keel today at their Papenburg (map) yard. Disney dream is the first of a pair of 128,000-ton vessels on order for delivery in 2011 and 2012.

As you might expect from Disney, the ceremony was not your typical low-key keel-laying.

Disney's Captain Tom Forberg shows the special Disney "good luck" coin that was set before the first block was lowered onto it. Captain Donald looked on and vowed he would never sail the ship to Peking.
