One Million Australians Can't be Wrong

Carnival Cruise Line began their outpost operation in Australia just six years ago with one ship dedicated to the Australian market bringing Carnival's brand of fun Down Under. Now they have two based in Sydney with one being upsized in December, and they have reached an important milestone.

The line has just celebrated their one-millionth passenger.

Record-Breaker Down Under

While much of the industry discussion has been focused on China, and its growth (or declining rate of growth), there's a market that's been steadily growing and continues to do so: Australia.

It Takes Longer to Get to Australia

“Anywhere” now includes Australia. Back in February we told you how Carnival Cruise Line's “Pizza Anywhere” program available via their Carnival Hub app was being expanded beyond Carnival Horizon and Carnival Visa. Our friends down at Carnival Australia are excited to tell us that “Pizza Anywhere” is now available on Carnival Spirit and it will be available on Carnival Splendor when it arrives in Australia in December.

Splendor in Australia

When Carnival Splendor arrives in Australia in December, it won't be the same ship it was when it leaves Long Beach in October. A lengthy stop in Singapore for refurbishment will change a lot.

We've already told you about the new waterslides that will be added. Now Carnival is announcing four new restaurants that are being added to the ship, specifically to appeal to Aussie tastes.

Not Just for the Caribbean

Just as it's always five o'clock somewhere, it is also hurricane season somewhere, and now it's Australia's turn.

Just like in the Caribbean, cruise lines are moving their ships out of the way to keep them and their passengers safely away from Cyclone Oma, and proving the advantage of booking a cruise vacation.

A list of changes by Carnival Australia brands was included in the February 21 issue of Cruise News Daily.

Look Who Ann Sheridan Ran Into

With the APEC summit wrapping up, the Carnival Australia ships that have been providing accommodation for the delegates in Port Moresby, Papua New Guinea, the ships began departing today.

As the first departed, Pacific Explorer and Pacific Jewel and Princess Cruises' Sea Princess each sounded their whistles seven times to achieve the equivalent of a 21-gun salute that echoed across the city.

Visiting the Fleet

Carnival Australia Chairman Ann Sherry got a three-fer when she went to Port Moresby (Papua New Guinea) Thursday for the APEC (Asia-Pacific Economic Cooperation) meetings.

The government has chartered three Carnival Australia ships to serve as housing for attendees.

As we reported earlier, the ships are P&O Cruises' Pacific Explorer and Pacific Jewel and Princess Cruises' Sea Princess.

Ms Sherry said supporting APEC with the three chartered Carnival Australia ships was "a natural extension" of the company's relationship with PNG communities. In 2016-18, its ships were scheduled to make 250 port calls bringing 400,000 cruise visitors to PNG destinations.

She was greeted by members of the Mk Kuri Kala group who gave her a demonstration of their music and treated her to a face painting.

"This is exactly the sort of rich cultural experience our guests enjoy when they visit PNG on cruise visits to otherwise hard to reach locations," said Ms Sherry. "It was a real privilege to meet this cultural group from Western Islands Province."

Girl Power Down Under

When sailing on any of the Carnival Australia brands and you see a woman in a white uniform, don't assume she's a nurse. She's probably one of the ship's officers. The company says they are doing their part to achieve gender balance in seafaring careers.

Good-Bye, Hollywood - Hello, Sydney!

Sture Myrmell Appointed President Of Carnival Australia In Expanded Role

December 1, 2017 - Carnival plc. announced today that P&O Cruises' Sture Myrmell would expand his role to include regional responsibility for the organisation's shared services group which supports all the global brands in this market.

Currently President of P&O Cruises Australia, Mr Myrmell will broaden his remit to become the regional President of Carnival Australia, which is the umbrella entity that supports the seven brands sailing in Australia and New Zealand.

Mr Myrmell's appointment is effective immediately. Mr Myrmell will report to Jan Swartz, Group President Princess Cruises and Carnival Australia. Carnival Australia is overseen by the Carnival plc UK Management Committee.

Carnival Australia is the only cruise organisation to have ships based year round in Australia with P&O Cruises Australia, Princess Cruises and Carnival Cruise Line with an 85-year, 40-year and five-year history respectively in this market. Cunard, Holland America Line, Seabourn and P&O UK also have proud histories sailing in this region.

The role has been open after Ann Sherry, who celebrated 10 years at the helm of Carnival Australia earlier this year, decided to step back from day-to-day operations to take on the part-time Executive Chairman role. She will continue in this role advocating on major industry issues.
"In addition to his responsibilities as the head of P&O Cruises Australia, Sture will lead the local shared services team that provides regional support across a number of internal and external functions for the business," Ms Swartz said.

"Sture has done an outstanding job as President of P&O Cruises Australia ensuring the brand reflects the energy of modern Australia, and this most recent appointment reinforces the strength of the local environment and Carnival Corporation and plc's commitment to the region."

Mr Myrmell has been in global cruising with Carnival Corporation and plc for nearly 25 years, including the past 10 years at P&O Cruises Australia where he has been key to the brand's evolution to a contemporary product that reflects modern Australia.

Prior to Carnival Australia, Mr Myrmell spent almost 15 years with Princess Cruises in California and Cunard Line and Seabourn in Florida, covering positions in Food & Beverage, Hotel Operations, New-build and Product Development. Sture first started his career at sea with Cunard.

A Few Words about Australia

During yesterday's earnings call to discuss Carnival's third quarter results, after mentioning the sale of three less-efficient ships during the year, CEO Arnold Donald said, “For that end, we have taken a write-off on assets currently deployed in Australia, which are less efficient with the intention of replacing those assets with more efficient vessels over time. ... P&O Australia generates revenue yields, both ticket and onboard, in line with our other brands in Australia, however, they have a higher operating cost in Australia and a disproportionate number of less-efficient assets."

Later during the call he said, "The write-down was strictly related to less-efficient vessels in the plan to put more efficient vessels there all the time. Australia is a strong market, has been for us and will continue to be and we are looking forward over time, you know the ships will come out over time and we will replace them all the time with more efficient capacity."

That was all that was said. It wasn't a major topic of discussion during the hour-and-fifteen-minute call, but later in the day, Carnival Australia released details of a series of ships that would either transfer brands or be reassigned to Australia by brands that sail there. The changes clearly demonstrate that Carnival sees the Australian market has become a major player in producing for the company.

Any Excuse to Raise a Glass of Ale is a Good One

It was just in April, Carnival Australia was celebrating National Beer Day with a glass of their ThirstyFrog Summer Ale, which is available only on Carnival Spirit and Carnival Legend.

Now in July they are celebrating with ThirstyFrog Summer Ale again, but this time it's another milestone for the beer. It's the third anniversary, and they have served 200,000 schooners, proving how much Australians like beer, especially this unique brand.
