One of a Kind Barrel

Last week we told you about the record-setting stay in Australian waters this year of Cunard's liner Queen Elizabeth. To commemorate that Cunard commissioned special uniforms for their iconic bellboys from Australian clothier R.M. Williams, and the Australian look was completed with Akubra hats.

But there's another tastier Australian partnership aboard Queen Elizabeth that has been three years in the making and is now “maturing.” We told you about the final year last year at this time.

Two Queens Meet in Long Beach

Cunard's Queen Elizabeth met one of her predecessors, Queen Mary, for the first time in Long Beach on Thursday, kicking off the start of Cunard's celebration in the US of their 175th year.

Queen Elizabeth docked in Long Beach Thursday morning, marking Cunard's maiden call at the California port. Her berth was adjacent to Queen Mary, which is permanently moored there.

As Queen Elizabeth was preparing to leave Thursday evening to continue her World Cruise, the two Cunard icons exchanged a whistle salute while overhead Cunard provided a dazzling fireworks display to celebrate the meeting.

Honoring a Retired Queen

Cunard’s Royal Rendezvous are usually quite special events for the line. On those occasions, two (or on very rare occasions, three) of their ships meet and salute and sometimes even sail together. Because they are so special to Cunard, they make an event out of it, and it becomes special for the passengers on the ships, and especially for those on shore witnessing the spectacle that’s created.

One of those meetings will take place shortly, but one with a bit more meaning. On February 5, Queen Elizabeth is going to meet the now-retired Queen Mary in Long Beach Harbor.

Details appeared in the January 28 edition of Cruise News Daily.

Cruise News Daily Headlines for June 19, 2014

* Overboard from MSC Divina
A passenger went overboard from MSC Divina Wednesday afternoon as the ship sailed off the coast of Brazil.

* AIDA Is Going to the Dogs
Usually we are writing about the German cruise industry being on the cutting edge, so this item may seem rather strange to our American readers. In America we are used to guide dogs and other service animals going everywhere. It’s actually mandated by law and expanded to include all sorts of service animals - various types (not just dogs) performing a multitude of tasks for those who are differently-abled.
   So it comes as something of a surprise that we are reporting that last month Carnival’s German brand, AIDA says they carried their first guide dog.

* Take a Look Around
A couple of weeks ago, we told you about the nine new single staterooms built aboard Queen Elizabeth (the ship). Today Cunard unveiled the rest of the multi-million-dollar refurbishment aboard the four-year-old vessel in the new video below.

Cruise News Daily Headlines for June 4, 2014

* One May Be the Loneliest Number, but It Gets a Great Location
Cunard’s Queen Elizabeth is back from dry dock, and as promised, she’s slightly bigger - in terms of the number of passengers she carries.
   During the dry dock, nine new single staterooms were added to the ship, but these aren’t like your grandfather’s single.

Cruise News Daily Headlines for May 16, 2014

* A Singular Refit
Queen Elizabeth has arrived at the Blohm + Voss Shipyard at Hamburg for her first scheduled dry dock since she entered service in 2010.
   Following the multi-million-dollar refit, Queen Elizabeth will leave the yard on June 1 and return to service on June 4 with a short cruise from Southampton to Amsterdam.

* Norwegian Jewel Returns from Dry Dock with New Facilities
Norwegian Jewel is returning to service Saturday after its regular dry dock, refurbished and ready for its Alaskan season. Of course, after Alaska, Norwegian Jewel will be ready for Norwegian’s return to the Houston market this fall.
   During the two-week dry dock, numerous enhancements and changes were made.

Happy Birthday Queen Mary 2! Cunard's flagship celebrates her 10th anniversary in The Big Apple, New York, New York, USA.

Master of Queen Mary 2, Captain Kevin Oprey together with members of his crew celebrate the ship’s 10th anniversary in New York City today. Cunard is today recongnising the long standing and enduring relationship with New York having sailed here since 1845. Cunard continued its celebration 10th anniversary of its flagship, Queen Mary 2 with her arrival in New York on May 16th from Southampton during the first of a pair of commemorative Transatlantic Crossings. Her arrival in the Big Apple pays homage to her maiden Transatlantic Crossing 10 years ago.

The ship arrived at first light to begin a day of joyous celebration in the city. A special afternoon reception on board was hosted to toast Cunard Line’s and Queen Mary 2’s long-standing relationship with New York over the past decade.

It Was Queen Mary 2's Day in Southampton

Cruise News Daily Headlines for December 16, 2013

* Viking Ocean Orders More
It’s still a year and a half before the first of the Viking Ocean ships is delivered to the line, but today Fincantieri announced Viking has ordered two additional vessels bringing their order for an oceangoing fleet to four.
   The oceangoing fleet will operate separately from the river cruises, but is targeting much the same clientele.

* Meeting on Giglio
Over the weekend (Saturday) there was a meeting on the Isle of Giglio for residents to update them on the status of Costa Concordia.
   What they heard should have reassured them that things are moving forward, but it also would have been upsetting to those who were holding out hope the ship would be quickly removed in the spring. It seems that the best estimate now is that the ship will be towed away at the end of June.

* Your photos are ready
In the last few days, it seems everyone has something they want to show us, so we have been busy posting those to our blog.
   We have the latest construction photos from Meyer Werft of Quantum of the Seas.
   Would you like to see the Christmas decorations on Queen Elizabeth?
   If Mickey Mouse is more your taste, we have the Christmas tree on Disney Magic.
   And we have a first look at the new Bacardi Bar on Great Stirrup Cay (NCL’s private island).

Video: Princess Anne Visits Cunard's Queen Elizabeth

Her Royal Highness, the Princess Royal (Princess Anne), visited Cunard's Queen Elizabeth while it was in Southampton on Wednesday (May 23, 2012). She was there in her capacity as Patron of SEA Vision UK, launching the Skills, Education and Awareness (SEA) program, a Secondary School initiative connecting youth with maritime sector career opportunities. As you can see in the video, any time a member of Britain's royal Family visits a Cunard vessel, it's an important day, but this week's Royal visit was enjoyed as much the ship's crew as it was the students who were presented to Her Highness.

Cunard's Queen Elizabeth Interior Design

Unless you think about it, when you’re aboard a cruise ship, it’s easy to overlook the fact that not only did someone have to design what the whole interior space was going to look like, but someone has to say “yes” to this light fixture, and “yes” to this carpet pattern instead of that one, and “these chairs, except in gold, not brown.”

That person for the most part for Cunard and Princess vessels is our friend (and CND reader) Teresa Anderson, Cunard's (and Princess') Vice President of Interior Design. It's always fascinating to walk around a ship with her, because, not only does she know every inch of it, but she'll mention details and how she came to choose these chairs or why that stairway looks like that, or that she really likes the way this corner worked out. ("For that balustrade we used the same pattern as on the original Queen Elizabeth.") Even though you only tap a fraction of her knowledge, you come away with a new appreciation for the ship and of things you never imagined had any significance.

Even though Queen Elizabeth has been sailing for awhile, Cunard released a new video about the ship’s design, and it features an interview with Teresa. In this video, you begin to get a sense of how involved she is, and why the Cunard and Princess ships have the quality they do.

Cunard Celebrates Queen Elizabeth's First Year in Serivce

Cunard Line is marking the first anniversary of Queen Elizabeth entering service, which is rather unusual for a cruise line. Then again, Queen Elizabeth isn't your average ship, either. This video gives you the particulars of her first year in a much more inspiring way than plain text telling you how many passengers have sailed on her and how many ports she's visited.

The backstory to Queen Elizabeth's history coming alive

Cunard is a line of history. The line proudly traces its roots, and each ship they build is filled with reminders of that history.

They also fill their ships with beautiful art - all types of artwork. There are massive works as well as small and exquisite ones. There are traditional and more contemporary pieces. There are serious and traditional subjects and more whimsical ones. Cunard invests what most people would consider a fortune in these.

Aboard the new Queen Elizabeth, surprisingly, one of the displays that's getting the most attention from passengers was one of the least expensive. And this is its (creepy) backstory.

Honk!

Her Majesty has been touring the ship while the naming ceremony has begun outside, and a 100-piece symphony orchestra, accompanied by a 150-voice chorus is entertaining the rest of us. We can watch The Queen touring the vessel on large video monitors. She is being quite gracious with the staff and actually chatting with many as they are presented to her. And then she got to the bridge. After meeting the officers, Captain Wells gestured toward some of the controls. With that The Queen's arm stretch out and the ship's baritone whistle sounded drowning out the orchestra and the chorus, but not the gales of laughter that went up from the crowd in the stands.
