Another Murder Right Where You'd Be in Nassau
Nassau continues to be a dangerous port for passengers.
A minibus driver was shot and killed Thursday morning about 7am at East Street North near Prince George Wharf, an area usually busy with tourists and cruise ship passengers. The minibus was from Stuart Cove's so the driver was presumably going to pick up passengers from the arriving cruise ships.

Careful in Nassau
The US embassy in Nassau has updated their advisory to American visitors to New Providence Island (where Nassau is located) and Paradise Island, reminding them of the high crime rate and updating them on the types of crime. The embassy is advising them to be alert at all times and aware of their surroundings.
It previously warned of armed robberies and other violent crimes which were rising in frequency.

Warning about Nassau
The US State Department has issued their strongest and most specific warning to US citizens to date regarding travel to Nassau, and yet the cruise industry is doing nothing about it, except admonishing passengers to be careful.
The warning was precipitated by another US citizen alleging a sexual assault by jet-ski operator in Nassau on January 2. This is the fifth since July 2014, with more by women of other nationalities.

* And Her Name is Regal
The original cast of “The Love Boat” christened Regal Princess tonight at Port Everglades. Prior to the ceremony, Princess created a fun tribute to the TV show which has been tied so closely to Princess Cruises by inviting its most frequent “passengers” to join in the celebration and recall their experiences on the show. It was like a Who’s Who of ‘70's television.
The ceremony itself paid tribute to the 50 years of Princess Cruises. When “The Love Boat” stars pulled the lever, it released 50 bottles of champagne to break against the hull of the ship, and then the fifty-first bottle was released on the Pool Deck to break just below the godparents.
There was just one small hitch. The bottle on the Pool Deck didn’t break, but everyone was having so much fun, it was like no one even noticed amid the rest of the celebration.

* Another US Warning
The US State Depart issued another warning to US citizens in the Bahamas this week. They are again warning of the rising level of violent crime in and around Nassau.
None of the incidents have involved cruise passengers, nor are they necessarily targeting Americans, but they are in the areas tourists frequent and have become bolder and more violent and in broad daylight.
* New Terminal Delayed
Florida Today is reporting that Port Canaveral’s new cruise terminal will be delayed in opening by a month due to construction delays.
The new Terminal 1 is now scheduled to open on December 27.

Most cruise passengers have never been to the naming of a new ship. Many may have seen the ceremony and the breaking of the bottle on the internet, but it is even more exciting in person.
Some passengers aboard TUI’s Mein Schiff 4's maiden cruise will have the opportunity to attend the ship’s naming - for a price.
* Taking a Page from Bermuda’s Playbook
Bermuda has taught Nassau a valuable lesson. There’s easy money to be made from tourists who come on cruise ships. A number of them will have drugs, and if you arrest them, you can fine them hundreds of dollars which they will readily pay rather than face a jail term.
These types of arrests seem to be on the rise in Nassau with four American tourists from cruise ships arrested over the weekend and in court on Monday. Altogether, fines of $1,500 were collected. Two of the men arrested together had just a gram of marijuana between them.

* Take Your Smart Phone - Leave it Turned On
Royal Caribbean had a press conference today to promote all the technology that will be aboard Quantum of the Seas when it debuts in a couple of months. There's nothing that’s going to advance us significantly into the future - at least not the individual cruiser - but there are things that are going to make life easier and make things more fun. There are also things that are going move the process of operating a cruise ship ahead and make cruising greener, however.
If this was an award show today, the award for best supporting players would be a tie, going to O3b for their advanced internet capabilities that will be available on Quantum, and the ship's own intranet upon which so many conveniences will relay.
The big story, from the passenger’s standpoint, seems to be the connectivity and the conveniences it will bring with it.

Online media in the Bahamas are reporting the Prime Minister’s Press Secretary, Latore Mackey, was shot and killed this morning as he was driving in the White Road area off Market Street in Nassau. It’s unknown if he was targeted or the victim of a stay bullet.
Murders have become commonplace in Nassau, and often in the tourist areas.
We have to again wonder when the cruise lines are going to start protecting their passengers by suspending calls at Nassau until the crime rate is lowered.
The calls need to be suspended before a passenger is the victim of a murder.

The courthouse in Nassau was clogged Monday with passengers booted off Royal Caribbean ships last Saturday because they were found to have illegal drugs with them, albeit in small amounts for personal consumption.
The five individuals were turned over to police by the security departments of two RCI ships in five separate incidents. In this CND article we look at the situation and see if this is the best way to handle these incidents.

Carnival Miracle has developed a problem in its propulsion system that is limiting the ship’s cruising speed. The problem is that it can’t be fixed until the ship’s next dry dock early next year, and that means itineraries on most of its sailings until then are being adjusted.
