Carnival Corp Announces Construction of Four Newbuilds

Carnival Corp is ending the year with the announcement of an agreement with Fincantieri to build four new ships for three of its brands. The deployment of those ships highlights where the industry is fastest-growing and where it will continue to put its resources. By the same token, those in traditional markets - ports, suppliers, customers, and travel agents - should note that things have changed, and it is no longer business as usual.

Two of the four ships will be for Costa, and Costa has already said they will go to their Asian division for deployment in China. One will go to P&O Australia for operation from Australian ports for the locally-sourced market, and one will go to Princess Cruises, but Princess has not specified where it will operate.

North Star Isn’t the Only Thing on Quantum That Goes Up - So Do Prices

It’s not like it hasn’t happened to Royal Caribbean before. They design a new ship, and they add some new features, and they turn out to be so popular demand far outstrips availability. While it’s nice to have a runaway hit, it also creates disappointed customers.

So what do they do? They add a charge to limit demand (and “enhance revenue” along the way). They did it with Johnny Rockets. Now apparently they are doing it with the North Star and Ripcord by iFly aboard Quantum of the Seas.

Yes, Carnival CAN

A few weeks ago we told you about Carnival and the New Orleans Saints partnering on an initiative to collect canned goods for the Second Harvest Food Bank in New Orleans by sponsoring a contest for New Orleans’ schools.

The effort resulted in 17,000 cans of food being collected for Second Harvest. But before Carnival turned over the cans, they saw an opportunity to do something that seems to come natural to Carnival - they built a cruise ship and displayed it at Monday night’s Saints game.

It’s Not “All Work and No Play” aboard Fathom

When Carnival’s Fathom brand was announced, it sounded pretty austere and focused on social impact projects. As the inaugural draws closer and we get more details, it appears there will be more and more opportunities for relaxation and fun - while still being immersed in the culture of the destination.

On the Dominican Republic itinerary, passengers sailing aboard Adonia will be spending four days in port at Amber Cove. When they are not doing a social project, Fathom has now released a list of leisure activities (a/k/a shore excursions) that are available.

Just a Small Additional Charge

Well, now Carnival has gone and done it. They’ve become associate members of the “We Charge for Room Service” club. After experimenting on a few ships with the concept, they are adding a number of premium items to their room service menu that will carry a charge and expanding the concept fleetwide.

Some people are excited by the idea of now being able to get a $6 basket of Firecracker Shrimp and French Fries delivered to them at 1:00am. Others are incensed that there is any charge and overlook that they can still get the same grilled cheese sandwich they always have and not pay anything for it.

In this CND article we look at the issues surrounding the charges for food on cruise ships.

The Bahamas’ Newest Island

Crystal knows what the luxury category is, and they are promising it on their river line. They tell us they are bringing their onboard ocean cruise product to their river yard vessels, and that promises to be unique in the market.

Holland America Line’s Master Chef Rudi Sodamin Creates a Gourmet Thanksgiving Feast for Shipboard Guests

Seattle, Wash., Nov. 25, 2015 — This Thanksgiving, guests aboard Holland America Line’s fleet of 13 ships are in for a culinary celebration as they indulge in gourmet dishes designed by Master Chef Rudi Sodamin. The tantalizing menu will feature an array of traditional and more contemporary specialties, including appetizers, soups, salads, entrées, desserts and Thanksgiving-themed cocktails.

Sodamin created the menu with his own traditions in mind, having grown up in a large family in Austria where holiday meals were meaningful. After Sodamin moved to New York to work at the Waldorf-Astoria Hotel, he learned about Thanksgiving and all of the menu staples that come with it.

“Creating a spectacular Thanksgiving menu for my own family, and for every Holland American Line guest, is a project close to my heart,” said Sodamin. “Our guests chose to share this special holiday with us on board, and I want to be sure that they have a memorable meal with classic favorites, as well as dishes with some modern twists.”

Holland America Line’s culinary team of thousands of expert chefs will prepare flavorful feasts that will be served in the main dining rooms across the fleet on Thursday, Nov. 26. Guests can start the meal with ambrosia fruit; Pilgrim’s meat terrine with a Waldorf salad, dilled shrimp and mandarin-orange-cranberry chutney; or a shrimp cocktail.

Soups and salads include a spiced pumpkin soup, sweet corn soup, carrot vichyssoise or bib lettuce salad with red beets.

Guests anticipating a traditional Thanksgiving entrée can savor the roasted turkey served with apple and sausage stuffing, giblet gravy, bourbon-infused candied sweet potatoes, Brussels sprouts, glazed dilled carrots and turnips, and cranberry orange relish. Guests opting for more contemporary dishes can dine on brown sugar-glazed salmon, honey-baked ham, beef tenderloin “Oscar” or pumpkin ravioli with Champagne Parmigiano-Reggiano cream.

Desserts are always a highlight of any Thanksgiving feast, and Sodamin has created five special options: classic pumpkin pie, apple pie à la mode, chocolate pecan pie, pumpkin tart and a Thanksgiving sundae with apple cider-spiced peaches and walnut brittle crisp.

“Thanksgiving is a cherished time to celebrate the blessings of the season with family and friends,” said Orlando Ashford, Holland America Line’s president. “Holidays allow our talented chefs to wow our guests with exceptional menus, and we look forward to celebrating with everyone on board.”

No meal would be complete without a pre- or post-dinner cocktail, and Holland America Line’s beverage team created the perfect drinks to complement the menu. The Midnight Pumpkin includes tequila, Cointreau and pumpkin purée, while the Purple Haze is made with vodka, Chambord and lime juice. After dinner, guests can complement their celebration with a Pumpkin Pie cocktail made with Baileys, Kahlua and pumpkin purée.

P&O Australia Names Two New Ships

A few months ago, Cunard brought their three Queens together, but P&O Australia has outdone them. This morning P&O made history by bringing their five-ship fleet together in Sydney Harbor. Not only that, but it was the first time two ships have been christened simultaneously - and the first time any ship has been christened via social media.

Of course the two ships being named were Pacific Aria and Pacific Eden (originally Holland America’s Ryndam and Statendam).

In the b-roll video below you can see the ships positioning before dawn this morning outside Sydney, and then sailing in formation toward Sydney and into the harbor. '

Life Imitating Art

A recurring storyline on sitcoms is having someone stay in a department store after it closes and living in the furniture department in the model rooms that are set up. AIDA is giving someone the chance to do something similar to that, and they could even book it on Airbnb.

All Work and No Play Isn’t Much of a Cruise

When Carnival first announced Fathom, it sounded like a rather somber week. People would spend their days doing volunteer work at the destination (in the Dominican Republic or Cuba), and the rest of the time they would be learning about the culture and preparing for the next.

As it turns out, Fathom is going to be much like any other small ship cruise, except most everything will be themed around the destination - in particular the food, entertainment and enrichment programs.

Finally Home

Back in September, we told you about a miraculous incident aboard Independence of the Seas a few weeks before when it was far out at sea.

A family of three was getting in a final vacation before the mom was expecting to deliver the family’s second child. She was only halfway through her pregnancy, and there had been no problems, so the woman’s doctor approved the trip. The baby had other ideas and decided to make his appearance during the cruise when the ship was still almost a day away from the nearest port.

Costa Cruises Signs Milan Protocol on Sustainable Food and Nutrition

Costa is the first in the tourism industry to sign the Barilla Foundation protocol, which focuses on worldwide imbalances in nutrition and food

GENOA, Italy (Nov. 19, 2015) -- Costa Cruises is the first company in the tourism industry to sign the Milan Protocol. Promoted by the Barilla Foundation Center for Food and Nutrition, the Milan Protocol is an initiative that focuses on tackling the problem of worldwide imbalances in nutrition and food.

The initiative has three main objectives: to promote healthy food habits, reduce food waste and promote sustainable agriculture. The idea is to create a civil movement that encompasses institutions, companies and organizations -- as well as individual citizens -- that will enhance awareness and propose solutions to the global challenges related to the agriculture-food chain.

"Costa Cruises supports the Milan Protocol because we believe that its objectives match the values of our company," said Neil Palomba, president of Costa Cruises. "We want to continue to work to promote a sustainable food model onboard our ships. We believe it is possible to propose to our guests, who come from 200 different countries, an excellent gastronomic experience, based on Italian traditions, that effectively combines pleasure, health and wellness, while avoiding waste and reducing environmental impact."

"We are delighted that an important company like Costa Cruises has become a part of the Milan Protocol," said Luca Virginio, vice president of BCFN Foundation. "We hope that its support will encourage others in the tourism industry to contribute -- through noteworthy initiatives like those developed by Costa Cruises regarding the menus offered on their ships -- to fight the important battle against hunger, obesity, food waste and exploitation of the Earth."

The Milan Protocol is one of the documents that inspired the Milan Charter, the legacy of Expo Milano 2015. The Milan Protocol was created in 2013 based on an idea of the BCFN Foundation. Today, it relies on the contributions of more than 500 international experts, and more than 100 international organizations and thousands of persons have signed it and support it.

Costa Cruises' commitment to the protocol includes a reassessment of the menus and food preparation processes onboard its ships. And, to minimize environmental impact, priority will be given to fresh food and products coming from local suppliers near the ports where Costa ships call.

The $8 Hot Dog

P&O Australia decided to poke a little fun at their competitors in Australia in a just-released video. Most American-based lines price everything onboard in US dollars, which is inconvenient and unhandy for most of their passengers on Australian sailings who are Australian. They have to keep in mind when they sign a check for a $5 drink they are actually going to pay closer to eight Australian dollars for it when they settle up at the end of the cruise. P&O, on the other hand, prices everything in Australian dollars, so the line decided to show what would happen if another company doing business in Australia priced its products in US dollars.

Princess Cruises President Jan Swartz Honored as 2015 Woman of Distinction by Girl Scouts of Greater Los Angeles

SANTA CLARITA, Calif. (November 6, 2015) – Princess Cruises President Jan Swartz was honored as a 2015 Woman of Distinction at the Girl Scouts of Greater Los Angeles annual ToGetHerThere luncheon on Nov. 5, which celebrates female leadership and inspires Emerging Leaders – high school Girl Scouts who are making a difference in their communities.

Addressing more than 600 influential women leaders and high school Girl Scouts, Swartz offered inspiring advice and shared her own story of selling cookies as a young Brownie in her home state of Texas - her first successful business experience.

“I consider myself something of a patchwork quilt of everyone I’ve worked with—I’ve learned from listening to them and…hopefully….others are taking ideas that I’ve shared and will use it as they grow in their careers,” said Swartz. “Because the great ideas—the ones that can truly transform things—don’t just come from one person, or one group. They come from anywhere and from anyone, so it’s important to value everyone’s input.”

Swartz also participated in a mentoring session with the participating Girl Scouts to offer guidance and answer questions about her career path.

She added, “no matter what you do, you should always watch closely to see what works and what doesn't. Don’t be afraid to change your mind when the facts change. We should always strive to improve.”

The event is part of a national effort by Girl Scouts to address the confidence gaps today’s girls face. For more information about the ToGetHerThere campaign and luncheon, visit girlscoutsla.org.

Swartz, the first female president of Princess Cruises and Girl Scout alumna heads one of the best-known brands in the cruise industry, overseeing a worldwide cruise and tour company featuring a fleet of 18 modern cruise ships that carry more than 1.7 million guests a year. The third largest cruise line in the industry, Princess has more than 25,000 employees and operations in more than 60 countries around the globe.

Swartz was appointed to her current role in November 2013, after more than 15 years working with the cruise line. Prior to this, she served as executive vice president overseeing the line’s sales, marketing and customer service operations, a position she held since 2009. In this role, she directed many of the line’s key operations including domestic and international sales efforts, consumer and trade marketing and communications initiatives, market planning and yield management functions, and customer service activities for both travel agents and consumers. She has been at the forefront of the industry in developing innovative educational programs and business-building tools for travel agents, through whom the majority of the company’s cruises are booked.

Deja Vu

Is it Anthem? Or is it Quanum?
Royal Caribbean’s Anthem of the Seas arrived home today to New York (actually Cape Liberty Cruise Port). The ship is coming to New York from a summer season based at Southampton. It will now be homeported at Cape Liberty year round.

But does this all seem strangely familiar? That’s right. Quantum of the Seas was homeported there last winter until it ran away from home to China earlier this year. Anthem is a duplicate of Quantum.

Norwegian Talks China

At yesterday’s conference call to discuss NCLH’s third quarter earnings with financial analysts, most of the talk seemed to be about China, which isn’t surprising since the company announced the Norwegian brand would be sending their next new Breakaway Plus-class ship there right from the yard. It will be designed specifically for the Chinese market. Both the ship and China have the potential to be huge moneymakers for Norwegian.

Sure we’ve heard how the Chinese market is huge and yields are good, but in yesterday’s call, NCLH CEO Frank Del Rio said some interesting things that really put China in perspective. It makes you wonder why there isn’t a steady stream of new ships to China. Oh yeah, there will be over the next few years.

The Princess Royal is a Patron of the UK’s National Museum of the Royal Navy (NMRN).

The luncheon was one of the early events in the organization's international campaign to secure the long term future of the HMS Victory, the centerpiece of the National Museum and the only 18th century ship of the line in existence. Proceeds from the event will go to the ship's preservation.

More Engaging and More Value throughout the Journey

After the first of the year, you’ll notice a subtle change in the Holland America logo. It will still be classic looking, but it will be simplified and modernized. The tag line below the Holland America name will also change. There won’t be a signature of excellence anymore. Now you’ll be told to “Savor the Journey.”

Like those subtle changes, your appreciation of the journey (that you’ll be savoring) will also grow because of a couple subtle additions that will help you be better prepared for your journey.

Water begins to enter the dry dock to float the ship for the first time.

Carnival Spirit Makes Scary Arrival in Sydney

In the "Spirit" of Halloween and all things creepy, Carnival Spirit arrived this morning in Sydney with a giant redback spider on its bow. The native Australian varmint adds an Australian "bite" to the American Halloween tradition. Research shows that more people are afraid of spiders than anything else. This one is more than 18 feet high. If they grow them this big in Australia, we can see why.

Cayman Takes a Tentative Step Forward

It would appear that Grand Cayman may finally be on their way to building a pier for megaliners. But before you start looking for Grand Cayman to have reappeared on cruise itineraries, there are still time-consuming steps for the project to go through first.

Premier Alden McLaughlin confirmed that on Tuesday the Cabinet approved moving to the next phase of the proposed cruise pier, but he said it could be a couple years yet before construction would start.

Raising the Curtain on Gold Princess

When Golden Princess arrived in Melbourne this morning, she made quite an entrance.
As Golden Princess sailed down Port Philip Bay, two helicopters carrying massive golden curtains flew out to meet her. Then in a dramatic move, the curtains were parted to reveal the ship to the city as she made her maiden call at her new home port.

Carnival Commits Two Ships to China

Carnival Cruise Line revealed today they will take two of their larger ships to China over the next three years to be based there year round.

Carnival Miracle will be the first to head China. Carnival said the 88,500-ton Spirit-class ship will reposition in the spring of 2017. The 2004-built ship is the smaller of the two carrying about 2,100 passengers. It was enhanced earlier this year with a number of the Fun Ship 2.0 features.

A year later (spring of 2018), Carnival will take an even bigger step into the Chinese market when the 2008-built Carnival Splendor joins her sister there. It is one of Carnival’s larger ships at 113,000 tons carrying 3,000 passengers. Carnival Splendor is a one-off type of ship in the Carnival fleet. It was originally destined for the Costa brand, and built on a Concordia-class hull, but diverted to the Carnival brand about a year before delivery to fill the US brand’s need for capacity.

End of the Story

A 24-year-old woman pled guilty in US District Court to a charge of involuntary manslaughter stemming from an incident we reported on back in October 2011. The woman, who was 20 years old at the time, gave birth to an infant while alone in a stateroom aboard Carnival Dream. She then left the child under the bed and told no one.

In a plea agreement, the woman pled guilty to the felony charge and was sentenced Wednesday to two years of supervised release.

Norwegian Epic Returns to Service with New Features

After a three-week dry dock, Norwegian Epic returned to service in Barcelona on Monday looking refreshed in most areas, sporting new features and with improved hydrodynamics under the water. She will now wow European travelers for a final year in the Mediterranean before relocating to Port Canaveral next fall.

The most important reason for a dry dock - when the ship is taken out of the water - is the work that goes on under the waterline which is normally inaccessible.

Projects were complete both above and below the waterline while it was out of the water. The complete story appeared in the October 20 edition of Cruise News Daily.

Australia Strikes Gold

Golden Princess made her maiden call in Australia on Sunday when she arrived at Sydney. She arrived after a 28-day cruise from San Francisco, and later Sunday departed on a 10-day South Pacific cruise.

The 108,000-ton ship is joining four other Princess ships during the line’s biggest-ever summer season in Australia. Golden Princess is also the first in the Princess fleet to feature the “Crafted by Curtis” menu items in its main dining rooms. They were created by Australian chef Curtis Stone.

Your Own Collectors’ Item

OK. AIDA has taken a clear lead in the race  among the world’s cruise lines to have the coolest geeky feature.

Why come home with just a photo of yourself in a formal portrait when you could have a 3-D action figure? Exactly. You must have that action figure.

Well, actually they call them “3D portraits,” and right now they are only available aboard AIDAbella, but we see geeks across the cruise world lining up for these.

Do You Hear That Buzz?

Have you checked your accounts on at least two social media services today? If so, you might be the target of Royal Caribbean’s latest ad campaign, but then again, you’ve been on a cruise, so they really have their eye on someone else.

At dead center of their sights are Millennials who have never been on a cruise and use social media very heavily. Those are the people who are really being invited to “Come Seek” in the ads and will really get it. Anyone else who wants to can come along for the ride, but they may not understand like those in the center of the bulls eye do.

The complete story appeared in the October 15 edition of Cruise News Daily.

These are three of Royal Caribbean's five-second spots that will begin airing Monday. They are designed to pique your interested and get you to watch the longer 30-second spot that will follow.
