Are You Ready to Go Back to Turkey?

The government of Turkey has a new program in place now through the end of 2019 that pays cruise lines an incentive to bring passengers to Turkish ports, a sizable incentive.

This is, of course, to counter the huge drop in tourism and cruise calls the country has experienced due to actual terrorist attacks in tourist areas and the potential for continued attacks.

It's Not Us, It's Them

Holland America Talks Turkey

Holland America Line has made the decision to cancel all port calls in Turkey through 2017.

The move follows a similar announcement by Cunard & P&O Cruises, also owned by Carnival Corp.

While the European-based brands attributed much of their decision based on advisories of the British Foreign Office and US Department of State, Holland America attributed their decision to “guest preferences for alternate ports.”

Sister line P&O agreed and did likewise.

Quitting Cold Turkey

Earlier in the aftermath of terrorist attacks in Istanbul, Princess and Holland America canceled all calls in Turkey through August, and for the rest of the year in Istanbul. They said they would make a decision on returning to Kusadasi as we drew closer to September. It's about as close to September as we can get, so we asked them today.

Both lines said they have now decided to forego calls at all Turkish ports for the rest of the year.

Update on Istanbul

The travel industry today dealt with the effects of yesterday's terrorist bombing at Istanbul's airport.
Contrary to the way things looked last night, the airport reopened and was operational today.

Cruise lines are now taking a second look at the wisdom of continuing to call at Istanbul, and three lines have canceled their calls. Others have not yet canceled, but CND believes they are moving in that directions and are now simply finalizing plans before making announcements yet this week.

Details appeared in the June 29 edition of Cruise News Daily.
