Enlarged Silver Spirit Returns to Service

Silver Spirit returned to service this week after a 59-day dry dock that saw the ship grow by 49 feet when Fincantieri inserted a pre-built mid-section into it.

The project was conceived to give Silver Spirit passenger much the same experience and onboard features and amenities as those sailing on Silversea's new flagship, Silver Muse.

Silver Spirit - Like You've Never Seen Her Before

Earlier we told you about Silversea's plans to lengthen Silver Spirit. Then, a couple weeks ago, we told you when it was time for the ship to head off to Fincantieri's Palermo shipyard. Now it has been there four days, and it has been cut in a precise operation, and the ship is in three giant pieces and ready to be stuck back together.

Ready for the Knife

Silversea's Silver Spirit arrived at Dubai this morning at the end of an eight-night cruise from Mumbai. When passengers disembarked, the 36,000-ton ship left for Palermo where it has a date with the welder's torch (as well as other unspeakable instruments) at the Fincantieri shipyard on March 5 that will run until May 1.

Longer Is Better

Fincantieri said today they will lengthen Silversea's Silver Spirit early next year, the first time Silversea has lengthened one of their vessels.
