An Award-Winning Performance

Last year, you may remember, we wrote about Carnival Elation picking up the captain of a shrimp boat that was sunk during Hurricane Irma. The other man aboard the boat was lost at sea, and the captain barely made it into the lifeboat.

For their bravery and humanitarian assistance, Captain Gigliotti and the crew of Carnival Elation were recognized this week with the Cruise Line Humanitarian Assistance Award from the Association for Rescue at Sea (AFRAS), an organization whose mission is to provide worldwide support and assistance to volunteer maritime rescue services and recognize and honor extraordinary maritime rescues.

The complete story of the rescue appeared in the September 14 issue of Cruise News Daily.

Rocking the Boat

Holland America added another step in their Music Walk aboard the ships when they announced today they have partnered with Rolling Stone to create the Rolling Stone Rock Room.

The Rock Room will be to classic rock what B.B. King's Blues Club is to the blues, for example, aboard the ships.

A Big Dream

Yesterday, MV Werften (the chain of German shipyards owned by Genting) laid the keel for the first 204,000-ton Global-class ship for the Dream Cruises brand.

The block itself which was lowered into the dry dock was 22 meters long (72 feet), 26 meters wide (85 feet) and weights 410 tons.

With 2,500 staterooms and suites a total berth capacity of 9,500 passengers, and sized at 204,000-tons (approaching Symphony of the Seas' 228,000 tons), the ship will be the largest ever built in Germany.
