Cruise News Daily Headlines for April 24, 2014
* Just Like the Caribbean Except in the Mediterranean
When MSC Divina came to the Caribbean last fall, it was to be dedicated to the American market and sail in the Caribbean year round. It’s still dedicated to the American market, but after a year a half, it will leave the Caribbean for the summer (2015).
It will be back for the winter 2015-2016 season, but why it’s going to the Med and not staying in the Caribbean makes sense, if you follow the reasoning all the way through.
* Carnival Expands at Galveston
Carnival Cruise Lines said today they will homeport a third ship year round at Galveston beginning next February. It will be deployed primarily in the seven-night market.
The additional ship will represent a 38% increase in capacity at the Texas port, because the additional ship will be the 110,000-ton Conquest-class Carnival Freedom.

* Have They Considered Lowering the Channel?
There’s been a lot of talk lately about the Port of Tampa creating a new cruise ship port on the Gulf of Mexico to the west of the Sunshine Skyway bridge in Pinellas or Manatee County (near St. Petersburg or Bradenton, respectively) so the Tampa metro area could accommodate cruise ships which are too tall to fit under the bridge - which means most of the newest ships, and virtually all the mass market ships on the drawing board. Lately, there’s been a lot of local excitement about that sort of project.
Now the Florida Department of Transportation (FDOT) is considering another option.
* Stepping Back into the Past aboard MSC Divina
MSC Divina is the most modern of Italian ships, and in many ways represents Italian life and culture today. During her Caribbean season this year, passengers on that modern ship have the unique opportunity to also enjoy something of Italy’s past. More

Up and Away
MSC Divina left Venice on Saturday (November 2, 2013) for its new year round homeport of Miami, and to escort it, MSC sent along the most Italian thing they could find - a Fiat 500. * Let Them Entertain You
It’s only a little over a month until MSC Divina arrives in Miami, her new year round home. There are lots of cruises out of Miami, but MSC obviously is going to be seeking to differentiate themselves.
In some ways, that will be easy. MSC already has a distinctive style about almost everything. One of the ways though they seem to have added, is that they are targeting repeat cruisers who will cruise several times each year. The way they are doing that is by making portions of the product different each time you cruise, not like some lines where if you cruise this week and go back on the same ship six months from now, it will be exactly the same cruise.
* Other Things You’ll Want to Know
CND subscribers also read about passengers who just happened to hear something ... and more about a big lift.

* MSC Divina Is a Big Deal
When MSC Divina debuts in Miami on November 20, it’s a big deal. This is only the second time one of MSC’s Fantasia-class ships, their largest ships, has left the Mediterranean. Last year one was homeported seasonally in South America. MSC Divina will be homeported in Miami year round. This is a big deal. (Vice President Biden would make it a little stronger, but wisely, he hasn’t been invited.)
And because it’s such a big deal, MSC is pulling out all the stops to celebrate MSC Divina’s maiden cruise from Miami.
* They’ve Heard It All Before
Tourism officials from Grand Cayman are headed to Miami to talk with cruise lines about the government’s plans to build cruise ship berths on the island and to try to convince the lines to keep Grand Cayman on the schedule, for at least some of their ships, while the new berths are being built.
* Grandeur Returns to Baltimore
With repairs completed from its May 27 fire, Grandeur of the Seas returned to Baltimore yesterday, its year round home port. More
