Galveston Partially Opens for Business

Everyone having anything to do with Galveston and the four cruise ships based there has their attention focused on this Friday and the coming weekend, when they all plan to turn around.

As the ships are all heading for Galveston at this time, the captain of the port issued some good news this afternoon when he partially opened the port, allowing ships with drafts of 33 feet or less to enter the port during daylight hours.

Galveston Remains Closed

The continued rain from Tropical Storm Harvey is keeping the Port of Galveston closed, and the uncertainty of when the storm is going to move is keeping the cruise lines from having any firm plans about when they can get their ships into the port. Consequently, there have been several changes of plans over the weekend, with both lines now hoping they can get their passengers home on Friday.

There are four ships involved: Carnival Breeze, Carnival Freedom, Carnival Valor and Royal Caribbean's Liberty of the Seas. All left last week, and most of their passengers are enjoying a vacation almost twice as long as they planned, although for many, under rather stressful circumstances.

The Place to Watch

After crossing the Yucatan, Hurricane Harvey has once again regained hurricane strength and is headed toward the Texas coast, expected to arrive late Friday and early Saturday.

The port to watch is Galveston, farther up the coast to the north from where it looks like the eye will come ashore. Still, the Galveston area is expected to be affected.

Galveston Wants to Swat Drones

The Houston Chronicle reports that the Port of Galveston is considering technology for their cruise terminals that will detect drones flying over the building and ships and help identify the operator of the drones.

Get Set for Higher Parking Rates

The Port of Galveston prevailed in the lawsuit three local remote parking lots filed against the port over access fees the port is charging them to drop off and pick up customers at the port for their cruises.

“So what?” you're thinking. You live in Florida, so you don't care about parking in Texas. You should care about this because the ruling does set a precedent that could give a green light to ports all over to raise fees, and in turn that will cause the private lots to have to raise their parking rates. It could even affect taxis and limos coming to the port.

Give Me Liberty, or Give Me ....

Apparently the word is “Valor.” Carnival has apparently decided that Carnival Liberty's mechanical problems are going to persist and will not be repaired as the ship sails during this cruise as advertised. The line announced the next three sailings from Galveston will sail at slower speeds on modified itineraries, and next month the ship will be swapped for the properly-functioning sister ship, Carnival Valor.

Carnival Liberty Troubles Grow

Passengers boarded Carnival Liberty last night after dinner, after being kept waiting all day in Galveston. The ship was arriving about twelve hours late due to “technical issues” that had it sailing way below its normal cruising speed. Along the way they were told a port was going to be dropped from their cruise, but they were getting a nice compensation package. All would be well though, because they would wake up Tuesday morning to a leisurely sea day, and they next day they would have the full day in Cozumel.

When they woke up this morning and pulled back the curtains to go out on their balcony and await their breakfast being delivered, instead of the wide-open sea, they saw the Galveston port around them. They also found a letter telling them to enjoy a leisurely breakfast and then get off the ship, nicely worded, of course. Carnival Liberty wasn't going anywhere today.

Miami/Galveston to Benefit from Carnival Changes

Every year or so as new ships join the fleet, Carnival shuffles the fleet among home ports, and like dominos falling, the announcements come. For the most part it makes everybody happy, because everybody gets a newer or bigger ship.

The changes announced yesterday were started by Carnival Vista joining the fleet. As we noted earlier, Port Miami let it be known that once Carnival Vista arrived in Miami, it was going to stay. Yesterday, Carnival detailed the itineraries it will sail and how Galveston will benefit.

Cruise News Daily Headlines for September 17, 2014

* It’s the Real Thing
Pizza is synonymous with Italy, and because it is so much a part of the culture, Costa strives to keep theirs at the top of the industry. With the recent enhancements to Costa neoRomantica came a new pizzeria and enhanced pizza. It has been so successful, Costa has carried the product out to other ships in the fleet.

* Seeing Spots Again
Passengers aboard Norwegian Pearl’s Alaskan cruise last week were notified that a crew member “likely has a case of measles” (rubeola).

* Texas = Taxes
The eyes of Texas may be upon you, but as we reported in December, the State of Texas is getting their hand deeper into the pockets of cruise passengers if they sail into either of the state’s cruise ports. Passengers have been surprised since the first of the year when returning and paying a state tax on their liquor and cigarettes at Galveston. Now the state is ready to "surprise" passengers at Houston next month.

Cruise News Daily Headlines for June 27, 2014

* Parking Wars - Texas-Style
It looks like another port is moving to protect its main business - parking. The Port of Galveston has filed a whopping 261% increase in what they are charging private parking lot operators to be able to bring their vans to the cruise terminal to pick up and drop off customers. The off-port operators are currently charging less for parking than the port is charging for their parking adjacent to the cruise terminals. But the parking lot operators aren't taking it lying down.

* The Italian Connection
Costa today inked an agreement with Trenitalia for a Rail/Cruise program that will provide a somewhat seamless connection from a passenger’s home rail station (in Italy) to the port city, a transfer to the port and the cruise for him and his luggage.

Cruise News Daily Headlines for April 24, 2014

* Just Like the Caribbean Except in the Mediterranean
When MSC Divina came to the Caribbean last fall, it was to be dedicated to the American market and sail in the Caribbean year round. It’s still dedicated to the American market, but after a year a half, it will leave the Caribbean for the summer (2015).
   It will be back for the winter 2015-2016 season, but why it’s going to the Med and not staying in the Caribbean makes sense, if you follow the reasoning all the way through.

* Carnival Expands at Galveston
Carnival Cruise Lines said today they will homeport a third ship year round at Galveston beginning next February. It will be deployed primarily in the seven-night market.
   The additional ship will represent a 38% increase in capacity at the Texas port, because the additional ship will be the 110,000-ton Conquest-class Carnival Freedom.

Carnival to Homeport Third Ship at Galveston

Carnival Cruise Lines announced this morning they have scheduled Carnival Freedom to sail from Galveston year round beginning in February 2015. This marks the first time a cruise line has homeported three ships to sail year round from the Texas port.

Carnival Freedom's regular pattern of cruises will be three distinct seven-night itineraries.

Details will appear in today's edition of Cruise News Daily.

Cruise News Daily Headlines for March 25, 2014

* Another Piece of Silver
Silversea added a third expedition ship to their fleet today. It was officially named Silver Discoverer in Singapore by Elda Turco Bulgherini, professor of navigation law at the University of Rome Tor Vergata.
   Silver Discoverer isn’t a newbuild copy of Silversea’s other expedition ships. It’s the former Clipper Odyssey, freshly back from a refit that made it into what Silversea passengers expect.

* Houston Ship Channel Reopens, Cruise Ships Leave
The Coast Guard opened the Houston Ship Channel on a controlled basis, and three of the four cruise ships that had been trapped in their turnaround ports left as soon as they could. Royal Caribbean’s Navigator of the Seas, having removed the indecision yesterday and canceled this week’s sailing, remained in Galveston with customers aboard enjoying the ship at the pier.
