Regal Is Ready

Princess Cruises said today that Regal Princess will be the second ship to become Medallion Class, meaning it is fully online with all the wonderful things Ocean Medallion can do for you.

It will achieve that milestone on February 17. Caribbean Princess was the first, going online for all passengers in September of this year.

Reaching out and Not Just Touching but Locked on and Streaming

Carnival demonstrated their super-fast mucho-bandwidth MedallionNet for the trade media today via a virtual press conference (in the olden days we called them conference calls) using the connectivity from Regal Princess as it was anchored just off Princess Cays.

Oddly, you could tell how well it worked, because there was nothing special about it, it was just like a normal phone call.

Cruise News Daily Headlines for November 11, 2014

* One Time Only
Last week I told you about the unique connection between Princess Cruises and “The Love Boat” which I learned so much more about at the naming ceremony. But I haven’t told you much about the evening’s program itself. It was  interesting for those of us who follow (or lived) history of the industry because the program was mostly paying homage to Princess’ 50th anniversary - and things happened there that we probably won’t see again.

Cruise News Daily Headlines for November 6, 2014

* They Get It
Last night was a really fun evening for a big segment of the cruise industry. Princess Cruises christened Regal Princess, but as much as it was about the excitement of a new ship, it was just as much about celebrating Princess Cruises 50th anniversary and a very special relationship with “The Love Boat” over most of those years.

Cruise News Daily Headlines for November 5, 2014

* And Her Name is Regal
The original cast of “The Love Boat” christened Regal Princess tonight at Port Everglades. Prior to the ceremony, Princess created a fun tribute to the TV show which has been tied so closely to Princess Cruises by inviting its most frequent “passengers” to join in the celebration and recall their experiences on the show. It was like a Who’s Who of ‘70's television.
   The ceremony itself paid tribute to the 50 years of Princess Cruises. When “The Love Boat” stars pulled the lever, it released 50 bottles of champagne to break against the hull of the ship, and then the fifty-first bottle was released on the Pool Deck to break just below the godparents.
   There was just one small hitch. The bottle on the Pool Deck didn’t break, but everyone was having so much fun, it was like no one even noticed amid the rest of the celebration.
   We’ll have a full report in Thursday’s edition of CND.

* Another US Warning
The US State Depart issued another warning to US citizens in the Bahamas this week. They are again warning of the rising level of violent crime in and around Nassau.
   None of the incidents have involved cruise passengers, nor are they necessarily targeting Americans, but they are in the areas tourists frequent and have become bolder and more violent and in broad daylight.

* New Terminal Delayed
Florida Today is reporting that Port Canaveral’s new cruise terminal will be delayed in opening by a month due to construction delays.
   The new Terminal 1 is now scheduled to open on December 27.

Cruise News Daily Headlines for October 21, 2014

* Stepping Back to 1977
The point of naming ceremonies these days is to get attention for a ship - to grab media coverage and to at least momentarily get the new ship in front of as many potential customers as possible. New ships aren’t the rarity they once were, so unless the ship has some really unique new feature, the cruise line has to be pretty clever to come up with something that will make media stop and look and run the story.
   The people in Princess Cruises’ PR Department are geniuses at hitting on just the right idea. (Has anyone forgotten the Duchess of Cambridge named Royal Princess?) I thought they had hit a home run when announced they were bringing together the entire original cast of “The Love Boat” to be godparents of Regal Princess. No media outlet is going to be able to resist that.
   If that was a home run, for insurance, Princess’ PR Department has now come up with a back-to-back grand slam that no media outlet is going to be able to let slip by.

* Digital enhancements from Port Everglades
Ft. Lauderdale’s port served up two new digital offerings just in time for the winter cruise season.

Cruise News Daily Headlines for August 26, 2014

* Watch This Space
By day, The Retreat aboard Regal Princess is a quiet haven meant for relaxing and soaking up the rays. By night, it’s deserted.
   This fall, however, at least once per cruise, when the stars come out, The Retreat will come alive.
   The Retreat will become the Night Sky Lounge and take on a South Miami-style nightclub vibe.

* HAL Reaches a New Pinnacle
It must have been some party in Italy. Fincantieri laid the keel for Holland America’s first Pinnacle-class ship last Friday, but they didn’t get around to telling us until four days later.

Cruise News Daily Headlines for August 13, 2014

* Regal Princess Naming to Launch Princess’ 50th Anniversary Celebration
Regal Princess entered service in Europe in May, and technically, it has been sailing without a name, because there was no christening when it entered service. Princess said that would wait until the ship arrived in the US for its inaugural Caribbean season.
   And now we see why. That celebration in November will kick off the cruise line’s 50th anniversary year of 2015, and judging by the special event they have planned for Regal Princess, it’s going to be quite a year.

* Queen Victoria to Get Enhancements Earlier
A mechanical problem is causing Cunard to send Queen Victoria to dry dock a year before one was planned for a major refit. Since it’s there, Cunard has decided to go ahead and add the various enhancements now, both above and below decks, which will make Queen Victoria even better for all of 2015.
   The drydock is now scheduled at Hamburg’s Blohm+Voss shipyard beginning January 3 (2015). The ship will return to service with its January 20 World Cruise.

* Meyer Floats Out Quantum
Early this morning (in Germany - overnight in the US) Quantum of the Seas was slowly floated out of the covered building dock at Meyer Werft. The experts made short work of it, because within about three hours, Quantum was docked at the finishing dock. By this afternoon, finishing work had already begun.
   We have photos on our blog,

Cruise News Daily Headlines for June 3, 2014

* Unexpected Result
One wouldn’t expect the inaugural cruise of a new ship to be controversial or a hotbed of dissent, but Regal Princess’ was.
   Shortly after it sailed, several readers wrote to tell us that on Regal Princess’ inaugural cruise, Princess was testing a couple of new charges. Customers never really like new fees, but most of the time they accept them. Over a few weeks, the cruise line might test several different levels, but in the end, one usually gets added without too much commotion.
   In this article we look at what Princess was testing and what they learned unexpectedly.

* What’s NEXT?
Norwegian Cruise Line announced a new $250 million initiative today that updates Freestyle Cruising to the “NEXT” level. It will bring many of the new features introduced on Norwegian Breakaway and Norwegian Getaway to the rest of the fleet.

* Costa Deliziosa Power Loss Modifies Two Sailings
Sunday evening about 6pm (local time) Costa Deliziosa experienced a power outage while it was docked at Valencia (Spain). Costa says that technical personnel began work immediately and within a “few hours” power was restored.
   The ship, however, did not leave Valencia while work continued to repair the source of the problem. That resulted in cancellation of the balance of the itinerary along with a modification to the next sailing.

Cruise News Daily Headlines for May 15, 2014

* Uncertainty Takes Toll in Black Sea
Citing ongoing uncertain conditions in the Ukraine, Silversea has modified the rest of this year’s Black Sea cruises that were scheduled to call at Yalta, Sevastopol or Odessa.
   Four sailings were affected. Silver Spirit’s July 21 sailing will remain a Black Sea cruise with Trabzon replacing Odessa. Three new nine-day itineraries (Silver Spirit on August 20 and September 29 and Silver Cloud on October 13) will replace the other Black Sea programs and focus on ports in Greece and Turkey, but they will sill call on the Black Sea ports of Constanza and Nessebur. More

* Princess Takes Delivery
Regal Princess was officially handed over to Carnival Corp/Princess Cruises today in Monfalcone and Princess wasted no time in sailing it out of the yard to nearby Trieste where it arrived just before 4pm. Princess is planning a relatively low-key celebration and preview cruise Friday, and they will mark the event of the inaugural cruise on May 20, but as we said earlier, they are saving the high-profile events for the fall when the ship arrives in the US and is christened.
   Today’s departure was actually made possible by an Italian court ruling last week.
   We have video of Regal Princess' arrival at Trieste here on our blog.

Regal Princess arrives at Trieste

Regal Princess arrived at Trieste this afternoon just before 4pm from the Fincantieri yard in nearby Monfalcone. Like its sister, Royal Princess, the ship's whistles can play the Love Boat theme, which is demonstrated here on its maiden arrival for Princess. Regal Princess will enter regular service with a cruise from Venice on May 20.

Cruise News Daily Headlines for May 12, 2014

* China Heats Up
Carnival Corp said this morning they are going to grow again in China by basing a fourth ship in China, which the company said was the world’s fastest-growing cruise market.
   Beginning in April 2015, the Costa brand will base the 114,500-ton Costa Serena (carrying up to 3,780 passengers) in Shanghai year round. It allows Carnival to say they are the first global cruise company with that many ships in the Chinese market.

* Fincantieri Delivers Regal Princess
There was cause for celebration in Italy on Sunday when Fincantieri, one of the “heavy industries” of the country, delivered a major product - a cruise ship, namely Regal Princess - to its buyer, one of only a handful of times it happens each year. (This is only the 65th cruise ship the company has ever built.) But in the weird, convoluted ways of the sea and shipbuilding, it wasn’t really handed over to Princess yet.

Fincantieri Delivers Regal Princess

Fincantieri delivered Regal Princess to Carnival Corp Sunday at Fincantieri's Monfalcone yard. The ship, a sister to Royal Princess, will enter service on May 20 from nearby Venice.

The ceremony was low key, intended mostly for local consumption, with Italian Prime Minister Matteo Renzi in attendance. Regal Princess will sail in the Mediterranean this summer. It will be officially named when it is repositioned to the US this fall for its winter Caribbean season.

Regal Princess Returns from Sea Trials

Regal Princess successfully completed six days of sea trials in the Adriatic and returned to the Fincantieri yard in Monfalcone (Italy) on Monday.

This was the first time the ship can really be seen in its entirety very near completion, so we have several different angles

Princess says everything appears to be on track for an on-time delivery on May 15.

* Cruise Industry Prevails Again in SC Courts
A South Carolina administrative law judge ruled Friday that the anti-cruise coalition of neighborhood associations and preservation groups lacked standing to challenge a state permit that allows work to begin on the new Charleston cruise terminal, and he dismissed their suit which sought to prevent the start of construction.

Cruise News Daily Headlines for April 7, 2014

* Deeper into the Caribbean - from Galveston
In most markets, Carnival sails the same schedule year round week after week, or the same pattern consistently. In order to offer some variety to regular customers, they will occasionally schedule some longer cruises that can take the ship to other ports than they could normally reach in their allotted time.

* Regal Princess Moving toward Completion, but ...
Regal Princess is still scheduled to sail her inaugural cruise from Venice on May 20, and work inside the ship is moving closer and closer to completion every day.
   It’s a good sign that completion is coming because Fincantieri told local media that sea trials have now been scheduled for April 16-21, and delivery has been set for May 15, five days before the inaugural cruise. But it’s also a sign that maybe things aren’t running so smoothly and things are running a bit behind. Then there’s another issue ....

Senior Officers Announced for Regal Princess

Senior Officers Announced for Regal Princess
Experienced Team Tapped to Launch Princess Cruises’ Next Ship

SANTA CLARITA, Calif. (July 18, 2013) – Princess Cruises has announced that Captain Ed Perrin will be at the helm of its next new ship, Regal Princess, leading a senior officer team with more than 100 years of seagoing experience among them. The senior four-stripe team will also include Relief Captain Dino Sagani, Relief Captain John Foster, Chief Engineer Rosario Segreto, Hotel General Manager Dirk Brand, and Staff Captain Aldo Traverso.

Following in the wake of sister ship Royal Princess, Regal Princess launches in June 2014 for a season of Mediterranean cruising. The ship will offer the same dramatic features that have already made headlines on Royal Princess, including a soaring atrium, the dramatic over-water SeaWalk, the new Princess Live! television studio, a special Chef’s Table Lumiere, and balconies on all outside staterooms.

“It takes a talented team to bring out a new vessel of this caliber,” said Jan Swartz, Princess Cruises executive vice president. “These skilled officers bring considerable seagoing and management skills to the new ship’s maiden season.”

Princess' Capt Ed Perrin
Captain Ed Perrin – Captain Edward Perrin has been in command of numerous Princess ships since 2006, beginning with the former Tahitian Princess sailing in French Polynesia. Captain Perrin attended the College of Maritime Studies in Southampton and worked aboard several types of cargo ships before setting off aboard cruise ships. He then joined Princess in 1996. A native of Dorset on the South West Coast of England, Captain Perrin grew up watching the cargo ships and ocean liners sail from local ports, which sparked his growing desire to work at sea.

Relief Captain Dino Sagani – Captain Dino Sagani commanded a variety of Princess vessels, including Sea Princess, Dawn Princess, Sapphire Princess, Diamond Princess, and most recently as relief captain on Royal Princess. Sagani was born in Trieste on the North East Adriatic coast of Italy. Following the family tradition, he studied at the Nautical College in Trieste, which is one of the oldest Nautical Schools in Europe. On completion of his studies, he joined the Italian Navy, serving on a minesweeper during the first Gulf War. After the Navy, he joined Princess Cruises in 1995, where he quickly climbed the ranks and was promoted to captain in 2007.

Relief Captain John Foster – Captain John Foster has most recently commanded Sea Princess and Grand Princess. Foster started his seagoing career as an officer cadet with Esso tankers at the age of 16. After completing his cadetship, he joined his first Princess ship – the original Royal Princess. He was also assigned to the new build projects of Dawn Princess, Grand Princess and Island Princess. Foster was born in the maritime city of Liverpool, on the banks of the river Mersey, on the North West coast of England, where he still resides.

Chief Engineer Rosario Segreto – Chief Engineer Rosario Segreto has held this position for Princess Cruises since 1999 and is now one of the most senior chief engineers in the Princess fleet. In 2010, he was asked to participate in the design and development of the new class of ships, Royal Princess and Regal Princess, and has spent the past several years working extensively with the shipbuilding team. Segreto is from the small town of Villamassargia on the island of Sardinia, Italy, and graduated from the Nautical School in Cagliari, Sardinia in 1980. He began his career at sea as a cadet engineer on tanker and cargo ships. He joined Princess Cruises in 1988.

Hotel General Manager Dirk Brand – Hotel General Manager Dirk Brand will oversee all hotel functions aboard Regal Princess, a position he has held aboard a variety of Princess ships, including most recently Royal Princess and Ruby Princess during the ships’ inaugurals. He has also worked aboard the ships of sister company Cunard. Brand was born in Berlin, Germany and grew up in Munich. After completing his education and apprenticeship in hotel management, he served with the Air Force in Sardinia, Italy. Fluent in three languages, Brand began his career at sea in 1998 as a senior assistant food and beverage director during the inaugural season of Grand Princess. He currently resides in Spain.

Staff Captain Aldo Traverso – Head of the deck department and second in command to the captain, Staff Captain Aldo Traverso joined Princess in 1998 aboard the original Regal Princess. A native of Genova, Italy, Traverso graduated from that city’s Nautical Institute, after which he served in the Navy – first at the Naval Academy in Livorno and then on board a Navy vessel. His Princess career began as an able seaman fireman, after which he rose swiftly through the ranks to his current position. Today, Traverso resides in the Piemonte region of Italy.

Regal Princess, will debut on June 2, 2014 with a seven-day inaugural voyage from Venice to Barcelona. The ship will then sail on a 10-day Mediterranean & Aegean cruise, followed by a season of Princess’ signature Grand Mediterranean cruises, with two itinerary choices.
