Coming Together

A couple months ago we told you about all the additional features being added to Cunard's Queen Victoria during its month-long dry dock. The ship is now about half way through it, and Cunard has provided us with some cool video of the extra space being created on the ship.

Queen Victoria arrived at Fincantieri in Palermo on May 5, and work began immediately. Last week the new aft sun deck and three decks below it (creating three new decks of interior space) were lifted onto the ship. A short video of the operation is below.

What’s Large and Purple and Just Fits under the Sydney Harbor Bridge?

No, it’s not a 90,000-ton grape. It’s Cunard’s Queen Victoria celebrating International Women’s Day.

The liner is in Sydney as part of its 120-day world cruise, and as dusk fell last night the ship began to turn purple (the recognized color for women’s rights) and wore a 60-meter-long banner along her hull with this year’s campaign message #PledgeForParity.

Details appeared in the March 8 edition of Cruise News Daily.

After Refit, Queen Victoria Begins Her World Cruise

Cunard’s Queen Victoria sailed away from Southampton earlier this week under a canopy of fireworks celebrating the start of her world cruise in Cunard’s 175th anniversary year.

Passengers aboard Queen Victoria are enjoying a refurbished ship just back from a 20-day refit at Blohm+Voss in Hamburg, updating the ship with many of the features recently added to Queen Elizabeth.

In this video, can see just how it was done - in Cunard style.

Cruise News Daily Headlines for August 13, 2014

* Regal Princess Naming to Launch Princess’ 50th Anniversary Celebration
Regal Princess entered service in Europe in May, and technically, it has been sailing without a name, because there was no christening when it entered service. Princess said that would wait until the ship arrived in the US for its inaugural Caribbean season.
And now we see why. That celebration in November will kick off the cruise line’s 50th anniversary year of 2015, and judging by the special event they have planned for Regal Princess, it’s going to be quite a year.

* Queen Victoria to Get Enhancements Earlier
A mechanical problem is causing Cunard to send Queen Victoria to dry dock a year before one was planned for a major refit. Since it’s there, Cunard has decided to go ahead and add the various enhancements now, both above and below decks, which will make Queen Victoria even better for all of 2015.
The drydock is now scheduled at Hamburg’s Blohm+Voss shipyard beginning January 3 (2015). The ship will return to service with its January 20 World Cruise.

* Meyer Floats Out Quantum
Early this morning (in Germany - overnight in the US) Quantum of the Seas was slowly floated out of the covered building dock at Meyer Werft. The experts made short work of it, because within about three hours, Quantum was docked at the finishing dock. By this afternoon, finishing work had already begun.

Queen Victoria at Bermuda

Queen Victoria made its first call at Bermuda today since Cunard switched its registration to Bermuda last month. Its home port (as shown on the ship's stern) is Hamilton, but ironically, it called at the more remote Dockyard because Queen Victoria can't fit into the Hamilton. Photo
