Cutting Rudi's Ribbon

When Holland America's Nieuw Statendam debuted last week, it came with a special restaurant - so special the line even had a ribbon cutting for it.

Nieuw Statendam is the first of Holland America's ships to have a dedicated space for Rudi's Sel de Mer. The first Sel de Mer debuted as a pop-up restaurant when Koningsdam debuted in 2016. It was such a runaway hit with passengers, Holland America decided to create pop-ups of the premium restaurant fleetwide.

Yesterday, the line announced the ship's initial senior officers. Together the officers have a combined 80 years of service to Holland America.

Rocking the Boat

Holland America added another step in their Music Walk aboard the ships when they announced today they have partnered with Rolling Stone to create the Rolling Stone Rock Room.

The Rock Room will be to classic rock what B.B. King's Blues Club is to the blues, for example, aboard the ships.

She Liked It So Well She Got Herself a Ship

Last summer Oprah Winfrey went on her first cruise ever, and she took along a whole boatload of fans on Eurodam to Alaska. She liked it so well, she's scheduled a “Girls' Getaway” three-night cruise to the Bahamas aboard Nieuw Statendam in January.

One other bit of news: Holland America said that Oprah will be the godmother of Nieuw Statendam and christen the ship at a later date.

The Ship with Something Extra

Holland America Line announced last week that when Nieuw Statendam is delivered in December, it will have something extra they weren't originally planning. Fincantieri has managed to build eight more staterooms into it than sister ship Koningsdam has.

Overall the 99,500-ton ship will have 1,339 staterooms and suites, including staterooms for solo cruisers, and family staterooms that accommodate up to five.

Floating near Venice

Fincantieri launched Holland America's Nieuw Statendam today at their Marghera yard near Venice.

A number of ceremonial events occurred today in anticipation of the ship actually being towed out of the dry dock on December 21.

The complete story appeared in the December 6 edition of Cruise News Daily.

Anne Marie Bartels, one of the line's most traveled passengers, was chosen as the madrina.

The madrina christened the ship before flooding the dry dock.
