Lucky Bowl-ing

This new Carnival option has nothing to do with strikes and spares - but it is all about noodles and rice.

Carnival Sunshine is the first ship in the Carnival fleet to offer the new “Lucky Bowl” dining option in the Lido Marketplace, replacing the Mongolian Wok station.

Electrical Malfunction Causes Carnival Sunshine to List

After having sailed from Port Canaveral earlier in the evening on a five-night cruise, Carnival Sunshine listed markedly for one minute due to a “technical issue,” according to the line.

The incident caused lots of breakage as dishes and glassware slid off tables and shelves in the dining rooms and in bars. Bottles rolled around or broke in the shops. Passengers reported tables in the dining room sliding and less-experienced passengers panicking. Beyond looking like a mess, there didn't seem to be any damage.

Cruise News Daily Headlines for November 18, 2013

* Full Circle
Carnival Sunshine was christened yesterday in New Orleans and left this afternoon on its first cruise from its new home port.

Of course it was a media event, so there is lots of coverage, both printed and video. It’s virtually all about the “new” ship, but there was a more interesting story in New Orleans. More

* They Aren’t Getting It
Last month, voters in Key West defeated a measure on the ballot that decided whether or not to move forward studying a project that would widen and deepen the channel into the port. Without the enlargement, cruise ships of today’s average size cannot get into port.

The measure was defeated, but new comments from those opposed seem to show some flaws in their logic.

Carnival Sunshine Christened in New Orleans

Carnival Sunshine was christened last night (November 17, 2013) in New Orleans, and its godmother is a woman who has been there throughout the life of Carnival Cruise Lines, Lin Arison, the wife of Carnival's founder, Ted Arison.

Confetti flew when Mrs. Arison pulled the cord to christen Carnival Sunshine while Capt Giuseppe Giusa looked on.

Miami Heat Fans Burn the Midnight Oil aboard Carnival Sunshine

Last night the Miami Heat won the NBA championship in the seventh game of the series. Thanks to satellite technology, Heat fans could watch the game virtually anywhere in the world - even on a cruise ship while at sea in the Mediterranean.

Miami police officer - and avid Heat fan - Winsor Lozano is seen here aboard Carnival Sunshine cheering the Heat victory this morning as the ship sailed a few miles off the coast of Naples, Italy.

Heat fans aboard Carnival Sunshine had to stay up until 6am local time in Italy to see the last basket in the ship's outdoor Seaside Theater on the Lido Deck. The ship boasts a new 270-square-foot LED screen.

Carnival Corp's chairman wasn't there, however. Micky Arison also owns the Miami Heat, and he was in Miami for the game.

Carnival Destiny to Undergo Massive Refit and Be Renamed

Carnival Destiny will not be leaving the brand's fleet as rumored. Instead it will undergo a major refit including expansion of several decks, and it will be renamed Carnival Sunshine in early 2013. When it returns to service it will incorporate all the "Carnival 2.0" features, most of which will have debuted on other ships by then.

The expansion will include 182 new staterooms raising double capacity to 3,006 passengers.

Plans for Carnival Sunshine then include a summer 2013 Mediterranean season, and at its completion it will be moved to New Orleans for year round service from there. The Mediterranean itineraries will generally be a series of nine- and 12-night sailings either round trip from Barcelona or between Barcelona and Venice (or vice versa) beginning in April 2013. It will reposition from Barcelona to New Orleans with a 16-day transatlantic crossing beginning November 1. From New Orleans, Carnival Sunshine will sail three different 7-night itineraries in the western Caribbean and Bahamas.

The $155 million refit will be carried out at Fincantieri, during a 49-day drydock that will run from February to April 2013. The Fincantieri yard will be designated at a later date.

The new itineraries are now open for sale through the 2013/2014 winter season. Deck plans are available on Carnival.com
