STX France Floats Out First Meraviglia-class

STX France floated out MSC Meraviglia from the dry dock at their Saint-Nazaire yard. The ship now begins the final phase of construction in the wet dock.

As we often note, this event is significant at most yards because it is the first time the ship has actually floated and becomes a ship.

Cruise News Daily Headlines for August 4, 2014

* STX Turku Yard Purchased
German-based Meyer Werft today announced they had reached an agreement to acquire 70% of the STX Finland shipyard at Turku, Finland from STX. The Finnish government will continue to hold the other 30%.

* TUI Cruises Orders Two Ships
Simultaneously with the announcement of the acquisition of STX Finland by Meyer Werft came the announcement that TUI Cruises had ordered two additional ships from the Finnish yard.

* Carnival to Develop Haitian Port
Carnival Corp reports that last week they signed a memorandum of understanding to develop a port on the Haitian island of Tortuga, off Haiti’s northwest coast.
   The port will be another of the company’s self-contained resorts for passengers to enjoy beach time and related activities in a private facility, such as they currently operate in the Bahamas, Grand Turk and the Bay Islands in Honduras.

Last fall KDB (Korea Development Bank) began pushing for STX to sell off their European yards. It looks like that’s about to start happening.
   Germany's Meyer Werft looks to be the first to capitalize on it.

* Just Looking Around
Thanks to Google technology, you can now look around Royal Caribbean’s Allure of the Seas the same way you look around a restaurant you’ve heard about in New York and in much the same way you can virtually walk around in London on your laptop from the comfort of your bedroom.

Royal Caribbean Orders Fourth Oasis-Class Ship

Royal Cruises Ltd said today they will order a fourth Oasis-class ship from STX France, subject to finalization of financial arrangements. The ship is scheduled for delivery in 2018.

The announcement came this morning at the keel laying for the third Oasis-class ship at the STX yard in Saint Nazaire (France).

Cruise News Daily Headlines for February 25, 2014

* Construction of Mein Schiff 4 Begins
STX Finland laid the keel for TUI’s Mein Schiff 4 at their Turku yard today. The ship, which is a sister to Mein Schiff 3 that is also under construction at the same yard, will enter service already in the spring of 2015, with bookings opening on March 12, in just over two weeks from now. 

* Staying Put
A few more details came out today in federal court about the brutal attack on a passenger aboard Holland America’s Nieuw Amsterdam two weeks ago. The hourlong proceeding was a bail hearing for the 28-year-old former room service steward who is alleged to have attacked the 31-year-old woman.
   The additional details that came out only made the story more grim.

Cruise News Daily Headlines for September 23, 2013

* Royal Princess Ends Voyage Early
A power outage on Sunday aboard Royal Princess, which was just delivered in June, has ended up causing Princess to terminate the voyage early and begin working to get the ship fully repaired before the next voyage, which starts on Friday.

The outage occurred while the ship was sailing between Mykonos and Naples as part of a 12-night Mediterranean cruise from Venice to Barcelona which departed on September 15.


* Production of Oasis 3 Begins
STX France took the first concrete step in the actual building of the Oasis-class ship for Royal Caribbean when they cut the first steel for the ship today.

The event took place at the Saint-Nazaire (France) yard where the ship will be built.
