Costa Deliziosa Rescues Eight
COSTA DELIZIOSA RESCUES STRICKEN YACHT
IN MIDDLE OF ATLANTIC OCEAN: 8 PEOPLE SAVED
The Costa Cruises ship, currently deployed on a Around-the-World cruise, made a 170-mile detour to save the crew of a sailing boat that was sinking in the middle of the Atlantic Ocean.
The 8 people on board were all rescued and are said to be in good health.
Genoa – January 15, 2014 – Yesterday at 9.30 pm Italian time, the cruise ship Costa Deliziosa successfully carried out the rescue of 8 people on board a yacht that was sinking in the middle of the Atlantic Ocean.

At the time, the Costa Deliziosa was crossing the Atlantic and heading for Antigua in the Caribbean, where she was scheduled to arrive on the morning of January 17. The ship left her route at once and sailed approximately 170 miles south-east in order to reach the stricken sailing boat.
The yacht, called “Buccanier”, was sinking after hitting an unidentified object and shipping water. The 8 people on board were trying to bail water out of the boat using buckets.

The Costa Deliziosa later resumed her original route on course for Antigua.

Looking around
Holland America has added a neat photo on their blog today. It's a panorama photo taken from the top of the funnel of Nieuw Amsterdam which is currently under construction at the Fincantieri yard in Marghera (Italy).
The panorama is a 360-degree view of the shipyard. Not only can you see the regular activity in the yard, but and you can also see Costa Deliziosa being built at a nearby berth at the yard.
Nieuw Amsterdam will be delivered to Holland America in June.

Costa Deliziosa Technical Launch Video
Costa Deliziosa was floated out at Fincantieri's Marghera shipyard March 12. Here in some amateur video you can see the beginning of the process. Fincantieri celebrates the occasion by breaking a bottle of champagne, then lots of water floods into the drydock, floating the ship up for the first time. There's lots of video here of water gushing, but as you'll see, it's a very slow process, usually taking about 24 hours, so in reality, there's not a lot of instant gratification. Eventually, the next day, the ship is towed out to a finishing dock where construction will continue, freeing up valuable space in the drydock so the construction of another ship can begin.

First Block of Costa Deliziosa Laid

No sooner does one ship move out of Fincantieri's Marghera yard than another begins to form. The keel has been laid for Costa Deliziosa, which will become the 15th member of the Costa fleet when the ship enters service during the spring of 2010.
The 328-foot section was built at Fincantieri's Ancona yard and towed to Marghera near Venice.
The 92,700-ton Costa Deliziosa will be a sister to Costa Luminosa, scheduled to enter service next June.
